Religious Commitment and Intent to Die by Suicide during the Pandemic
Suicide is the second leading cause of death in 10-34-year-olds in the U.S. It is vital to identify protective factors that promote resilience in a suicide crisis. Background: This study explored the contributions of religious commitment (RC) and religious service attendance to decreased suicide intent in 18-34-year-olds. Possible moderators were investigated, including church-based social support, pandemic-related faith struggles (PRFS), and mor…
Authenticity and Gender
Great War memoirs by both soldiers and nurses emphasise the role of eye-witness in establishing the authority of the account. This authority is acknowledged in the public response to these texts, which crosses both national and gender boundaries. However, the response is asymmetric between genders: soldiers were often blamed for insisting on the primacy of personal experience in their accounts, on the grounds that this made the war seem senseless…

Introduction to Part I
Our ears and our eyes
News from Iraq in the Western media is highly dependent upon Iraqi journalists and coworkers, especially fixers. This is partly due to the degradation of the security situation since the 2003 invasion, and partly due to language: few Western journalists speak Arabic at a professional level of competence. Interviews with Western journalists and fixers in Iraq reveal the high level of dependence involved. They also reveal some commonalities of unde…

Source Strategies and Media Audiences
This article argues for a particular approach to the relationship between the production and reception of mass media, using as a key the theory of targeting and its application in elements of the political marketing mix: media relations and news management. In particular, two case studies show that in this context very fine-tuned targeting is normal and that the details of conjuncture are crucial. The implications of this form of targeting for th…
Taking Humour Seriously
First published in 1993. When do we laugh? Why do we laugh? What makes us stop? What does ‘humour’ consist of? Listen to any everyday conversation: it is full of the constant interruptions and detours of humour. Look at the TV schedules for any evening—how many of the programmes are comedies or contain a degree of humour? Humour and comedy invite our pleasure at every step we take—they are absolutely integral to any culture. In Taking Humour Seri…
Design and Aesthetics
Introduction to Part I
We start from the commonplace recognition that ‘an aesthetics of design’ is always problematic insofar as ‘design’ and ‘aesthetics’ refer to divergent traditions of understanding creative activity-indeed to different traditions of such activity-despite twentieth-century attempts to resolve divergence (both in theory and in practice) around slogans such as ‘form follows function’. The essays that compose this collection all address some aspect or …
Smoke and mirrors
Political marketing has become popularly associated with the triumph of style over substance, not to say the worst excesses of the spin doctor’s art. Analysis of professional and academic literature allows us to estimate to what extent professional practitioners recommend actions that fit with this preconception. There is general agreement that recent changes in political life - especially the decline of party affiliation and the increased import…
Permission to joke
