  • Defining and measuring financial inclusion

    Open Access•Vanesa Pesqué‐Cela, Lihui Tian et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of International…•2021

This study re‐examines the construct of financial inclusion, through a literature review and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). First, we conduct a systematic review of definitions, measures and data sources. Second, we apply CFA to test two prominent financial inclusion indices. The CFA analysis reveals a high correlation between the ‘access’ and ‘use’ dimensions; hence, indices fail to capture the multidimensionality of financial inclusion. Ex…

  • Technical self-sufficiency, pricing independence

    Damian Tobin•ARTICLE•Business History•2019•Citada por: 2•Referências: 14

International embargos and the withdrawal of Soviet technical expertise had by the early 1960s effectively engrained China’s approach to energy and technical self-sufficiency. Chinese officials cited reasons similar to those advanced by Edith Penrose in her critique of the international oil companies’ (IOC’s) investments. Drawing on Penrose’s approach, this article shows that although self-sufficiency led to significant progress in primary capaci…

  • Continuity and Pragmatism

    Damian Tobin•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Asia•2016•Citada por: 1•Referências: 22

An insight into this puzzle is provided by Chinese state-owned banks in Hong Kong. From 1949–78 these banks, led by the Bank of China, represented China’s primary financial interface with the outside world. What distinguished the management of these banks from their peers was their loyalty to communist values.…

  • Offshoring the Uncovered Liability Problem

    Damian Tobin•Referências: 18

The existence of an uncovered liability has historically benefited foreign banks and lead currencies. Using the case of China’s efforts to fund its foreign exchange needs by exploiting loopholes in the international financial architecture, the paper examines whether using state-owned settlement banks as a means of intermediating a specialised ‘non-deliverable’ financial asset in offshore markets can substitute the institutional and technical prer…
