Redefining the notion of nativeness and age of first exposure
Heritage language speakers’ self-perception as native has been recently shown to be linked to various measures of proficiency, including objective measures of lexical and grammatical knowledge. The relationship between age of first exposure, a crucial factor dividing heritage from L2 speakers in the traditional sense, is less clear. This paper, thus, explores the relationship between a heritage and traditional L2 classroom learner’s perception as…
First language (L1) maintenance in typologically close languages
The present study contributes to the growing body of research showing absence of first language (L1) attrition when the L1 and second language (L2) are structurally aligned and regularly used. It investigates possible language attrition in the morphosyntactic features of 3rd-person Italian accusative clitics across three clitic structures in sequential L1-Italian–L2-Spanish speakers immersed in a Spanish-predominant environment. A total of 19 Ita…

Task effects and the yes-bias in heritage language bilingualism
This study investigated three key issues in heritage language (HL) research. Previous research shows HL speakers have an advantage on oral production tasks compared to L2 speakers who instead perform better on written tasks. Furthermore, both L2 and HL speakers are claimed to have a yes-bias towards retaining ungrammaticality in GJTs. Finally, the morphological domain has been shown to be as problematic for HL as L2 speakers but research in lesse…
Task effects and the yes-bias in heritage language bilingualism
Aims and objectives/purpose/research questions: This study investigated three key issues in heritage language research. Previous research shows heritage language speakers have an advantage on tasks of oral production compared to L2 speakers who instead perform better on written tasks requiring use of metalinguistic skills. Furthermore, both L2 and heritage speakers are claimed to have a yes-bias towards retaining ungrammaticality in grammaticalit…
L1 versus Dominant Language Transfer Effects in L2 and Heritage Speakers of Italian
Conversely to plenty of studies describing how L1 transfer affects L2 systems, where the two grammars, L1/L2, often only come to interact later in life, less is known of dominant language transfer in heritage language grammars. Unlike in L2 speakers, the dominant language of the heritage speaker potentially affects its weaker language already from childhood. Evidence of dominant language transfer, however, exists in language production studies fo…
Operating Theatre Ventilation Systems and Their Performance in Contamination Control
In Operating Theatres (OT), the ventilation system plays an important role in controlling airborne contamination and reducing the risks of Surgical Site Infections (SSIs). The air cleanliness is really crucial in this field and different measurements are used in order to characterize the situation in terms of both airborne microbiological pollutants and particle size and concentration. Although the ventilation systems and airborne contamination a…
Surgical Smoke and Airborne Microbial Contamination in Operating Theatres
Air cleanliness is a crucial factor in operating theatres (OTs), where the health of patients and staff must be preserved by controlling air contamination. Particular attention must be paid to ultrafine particles (UFPs) size range, generated for instance by electrosurgical instruments (ESTs). OT contamination is also affected by ventilation systems, medical staff and their gowning system, staff routines, instruments, etc. This comparative study i…
Remarks on research of anaphora resolution in situations of language contact
Purpose: This article proposes a new definition of cross-linguistic influence on anaphora resolution in situations of language contact appealing to the Position of Antecedent Strategy. Design: To this effect it examines existing evidence for and definitions of cross-linguistic influence across Spanish, Italian, Greek, and English, four languages research has concentrated on most intensively. Data and analysis: Methodological and theoretical issue…
Morphological variability in L2 Italian
Key accounts of morphological variability in L2 acquisition posit either deficits in the representation of abstract morphosyntactic features or the mapping between morpho-phonological forms and syntactic features due to computational limitations. This study extends previous research to L2 Italian, a richly inflected language. The production and grammatical intuitions of suppletive and affixal verb inflection were elicited from a cross-section of …
The basic continuity hypothesis of L1 to L2 production
To what extent can second language (L2) speakers acquire a syntactic representation for an L2 structure absent in the first language (L1)? Findings from L2 structural priming studies are in conflict inasmuch as evidence for and against continuity between L1 and L2 sentence production has been shown. Furthermore, previous investigations have not adequately controlled for well-known animacy effects on choice of syntactic frames. I address the confl…

La défense de Platon contre Aristote par les néoplatoniciens
Pour aborder le problème de la défense de Platon contre Aristote par les Néoplatoniciens, il est nécessaire d’opérer des distinctions à la fois historiques et théoriques ; il faut en effet tenir compte tant du développement chronologique de la pensée néoplatonicienne, que des différences pouvant exister d’une école néoplatonicienne à l’autre. Il semble, par exemple, que Jamblique et Proclus aient adopté des positions sensiblement divergentes sur …
