The paper examines the prevalence and mechanisms of discrimination in the informal shared housing market against transgender and nonbinary persons. Employing a correspondence test, the study investigates the responses to fictitious applications from transgender and nonbinary individuals to shared apartment offers in Germany. The findings reveal significant discrimination against these groups, with varying degrees of discrimination across differen…
In hiding? Multifaceted reactions of German Jews to the threat of antisemitism
The paper investigates reactions of Jews to the perceived risk of antisemitic incidents in Germany by using a mixed-methods design. First, findings from qualitative interviews with 21 German Jews are presented: They perceive Jewishness as a stigmatized identity which ‘spoils’ everyday interactions, often simply because it is linked to the ‘weight’ of German history. We derive two analytical types of reaction to perceptions of stigmatization: defe…
Importierter Antisemitismus“?
The revelations of Q. Dissemination and resonance of the QAnon conspiracy theory among US Evangelical Christians and the role of the Covid-19 crisis
Previous studies show that the QAnon conspiracy theory is especially popular among American evangelical Christians. The paper investigates the reasons behind this relationship. We hypothesize a mediation relationship between evangelical dogma and how it is practiced on the one hand and the susceptibility for conspiracy thinking on the other hand. We argue that evangelicalism due to its biblicism is characterized by the belief that its perception …
The prevalence of identity among religious minorities in different human rights environments
This paper investigates the correlations between the human rights situation and religious identity among minorities. It uses an integrated longitudinal dataset of the World Values Survey waves from 1990 to 2014 and three human rights measures to test how (a) constitutional guarantees of religious freedom and equality, (b) governmental human rights practices, and (c) societal discrimination and prejudice against minority religions correlate with t…
Uncovering the Nexus Between Attitudes, Preferences, and Behavior in Sociological Applications of Stated Choice Experiments
Multifactorial survey experiments such as stated choice experiments are used more and more frequently in social science research. In this article, based on an experimental study on ethical and political consumption, we explore the potential of hybrid choice models to explicitly model latent psychological factors such as attitudes, overcoming a possible endogeneity bias and misrepresentation of causality. To this end, we employ a hybrid latent cla…
Examining discrimination in everyday life
Prejudice and discrimination in everyday life are persistent problems for most societies but difficult to uncover and explain by empirical social research. Complementing existing approaches to study discrimination, we demonstrate the usefulness of survey-based stated choice experiments to explore everyday discrimination and its heterogeneity within a multifactorial framework. In our study German respondents (n = 766) were asked to choose between …
The cultural code of antifeminist communication
The paper investigates the mechanisms of antifeminist communication norms, both on a theoretical and empirical level. Applying the concept of 'cultural codes' to the study of antifeminism we argue that statements denouncing feminism are often used as a signal to communicate a more general authoritarian worldview and an opposition towards 'political correctness'. In the empirical part we present a factorial survey design applied to a German sample…
The Globalization of Resentment
Objective The article presents a global comparison of antisemitic attitudes and their functions. Methods The sample of the study consists of 18 countries from five continents surveyed in 2011 by the Pew Research Center ( n = 13,975). These data are analyzed using multilevel analyses. Results It can be shown that antisemitism, on the one hand, offers a pseudo‐explanation for rapid social change by equating capitalism, “American imperialism,” and g…
How Stable Are Anti-American Attitudes Over Time? A Test-Retest Study in Germany Including Twelve Statements to Measure Aversion Against America and Americans
Presenting a comprehensive measurement instrument of 12 statements expressing resentments toward Americans and America, this study shows that anti-Americanism can be conceptualized as a robust and stable attitude transcending everyday politics. In a test-retest design applied in Germany in 2011 and 2012, we found a fair to moderate temporal stability of anti-American attitudes. Furthermore, we tested for consistency of potential correlates of ant…
The Elective Affinities of Anti‐Semitic and Anti‐American Resentments in Germany
Objective Recent works on anti‐Americanism have indicated a link between anti‐American and anti‐Semitic resentments but neither an explication of the underlying mechanisms nor satisfying empirical data regarding such a relationship exist. This article offers historical insights and theoretical reflections as well as quantitative data for the case of Germany with which the theoretical assumptions are tested. Methods The sample of the study consist…

Has Anti-Americanism Become a 'Progressive Prejudice' in Germany? Attitudes of the German Public toward America and Americans
The article examines the causes and social mechanisms of anti-American attitudes and behavior and illustrates the fruitfulness of this theoretical approach using the example of Germany. We argue that anti-American attitudes are rooted mainly in two sociopsychological functions: the rationalization of social change and the projection of self-parts that have been suppressed. Other determinants are social norms, lack of personal social contact with …

Anti‐Americanism
Although anti‐Americanism has a long tradition, particularly in Europe, the topic has only recently become a major issue for the social sciences. “Anti‐Americanism” denotes essentialistic devaluations of entities perceived to be “typically American” and is made up of attitudinal, behavioral, and discursive dimensions. Despite the intuitive nature of the problem, anti‐Americanism cannot be fully explained as a rational reaction to America's hegemo…

Three experimental approaches to measure the social context dependence of prejudice communication and discriminatory behavior
Anti-Americanism in Europe
One of the most popular explanations for post-9/11 anti-Americanism argues that resentment against America and Americans is mainly a function of the US government’s unpopular actions. The present article challenges this interpretation: first, it argues that neither the vitality of the resentment in times when the United States had no influence in the respective parts of the world nor its recent radical manifestations are accounted for in a politi…
Antisemitismus heute / Anti-Semitism Today
