Understanding the effect of abortion attitudes on elections after Dobbs
Objective We investigate the nature of abortion opinion after the Dobbs decision's reversal of Roe v. Wade with attention to the evaluation of incumbents and vote preference. Method We relied on pre‐ and post‐election cross‐sectional and panel survey data from Texas. Although recent political science research has established that face-to-face contacting mobilizes eligible citizens to vote, the emphasis on field experiments to facilitate causal inference has occasionally come at the expense of a deeper knowledge of how campaigns develop and implement canvassing and get-out-the-vote (GOTV) programs. Organizing Staff in the U.S. Senate
Funding for legislative staff represents a valuable commodity to legislators. However it is a resource distributed to separate internal organizations. Previous studies show strong correlations between a legislator's available institutional power and the benefits of having access to more staffing resources. Objective This article examines how the rapid spread of COVID‐19 and political discourse framed absentee ballots as a solution to keep voters safe or a threat to the election's integrity. Did the increased attention to the use of absentee ballots in our elections encourage more people to participate absentee and support changes in Texas's election code to allow no‐excuse absentee voting? Circumventing Legislative Committees
Committees have been established to improve legislation and make expert recommendations. However, many bills do not appear in committees, and how they reach the Senate floor varies in style and strategy. We develop and test expectations for when, as well as how, bills bypass Senate committee proceedings. The procedures legislators use to circumvent committees and what makes committee bypassing more probable are explored. The findings clearly demo…
The Promise and Challenge of Multireligious Peacebuilding in the 21st Century
This article explores whether a relational approach to peacebuilding, shared multireligious perspectives and widening networks can bring sources of strength which enable positive peacebuilding and create grassroots, cross-community peace. Since the beginning of the new millennium, violent conflicts around the world have contributed to a significant increase in the number of international migrants, reaching nearly 260 million in 2017, including almost 26 million refugees. The Vice President in the U.S. Senate
The constitutional placement of the vice president as the president of the Senate gives procedural control of the Senate to an individual who is not elected by the chamber. We argue that because the vice president frequently acts against the wishes of Senate majorities, senators have been reluctant to allow chamber power to be centralized under their largely unaccountable presiding officer. The motion to table plays a prominent role in many scholarly accounts of policymaking in the Senate. Scholars have argued that it is used with several other motions to allow majority party leaders to bias policy outcomes on the chamber floor.
