“As it is about that, they do as they please”
Accessing acceptable postabortion care (PAfor remains a major challenge in sub-Saharan Africa, where abortion is legally restricted and highly stigmatized, particularly for young and socioeconomically disadvantaged women. Evidence on the specific obstacles faced by these groups in rural and semi-urban settings is limited. This study explored women’s experiences with PAC quality in Kaya, a small town in Burkina Faso. We conducted in-depth intervie…
Assessing urban–rural inequality in the primary healthcare system readiness to provide postpartum care for mothers and newborns in Burkina Faso
Our findings suggest an overall lower readiness score for the postpartum care, with a low overall and within urban and rural areas inequality. Even low, reducing these inequalities might help to provide high-quality postpartum care for all mothers and newborns regardless of their place of residence
A global analysis of the determinants of maternal health and transitions in maternal mortality
The reduction of maternal mortality and the promotion of maternal health and wellbeing are complex tasks. This Series paper analyses the distal and proximal determinants of maternal health, as well as the exposures, risk factors, and micro-correlates related to maternal mortality. This paper also examines the relationship between these determinants and the gradual shift over time from a pattern of high maternal mortality to a pattern of low mater…
Infection-related severe maternal outcomes and case fatality rates in 43 low and middle-income countries across the WHO regions
The highest toll of maternal mortality due to infections is reported in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). However, more evidence is needed to understand the differences in infection-related severe maternal outcomes (SMO) and fatality rates across the WHO regions. This study aimed to compare the burden of infection-related SMO and case fatality rates across the WHO regions using the Global Maternal Sepsis Study (GLOSS) data. GLOSS was a hos…
Embedding research capacity strengthening in multi-country studies in low-and middle-income countries
Research capacity strengthening (RCS) can empower individuals, institutions, networks, or countries to define and prioritize problems systematically; develop and scientifically evaluate appropriate solutions; and reinforce or improve capacities to translate knowledge into policy and practice. However, how to embed RCS into multi-country studies focusing on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) is largely undocumented. We used findings …
Searching for Needles in a Haystack
This study aims to describe the circumstances under which women obtained abortions in two sites, explore more nuanced approaches to classify abortion safety and examine the relationship between safety and self‐reported health outcomes. We analyze data on the most recent abortion or only abortion reported by 551 women in Nairobi slums and 479 women in rural Kaya ages 15–49 years within the three years preceding the study, recruited via respondent‐…
Using Respondent-Driven Sampling to measure abortion safety in restrictive contexts
Background : Due to restrictive laws and limited service provision, globally the majority of induced abortions are unsafe and remain largely undocumented, despite their negative impact on women’s health. \n Objective : The purpose of this study is to test Respondent-Driven Sampling – used previously in HIV research – for abortion, and to measure abortion safety characteristics in the small town of Kaya and surrounding villages (Burkina Faso) and …
Perinatal outcomes in women with lower-range elevated blood pressure and stage 1 hypertension
Our results suggest that the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes is not increased with elevated BP. Proactive identification of pregnant women with stage 1 hypertension in Burkina Faso can improve hypertension management through enhanced clinical surveillance
Prevalence and Factors Associated with Cardiovascular Lifestyle Risk Factors among Pregnant Women in Burkina Faso
Data on lifestyle risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, inadequate physical activity, and insufficient consumption of fruits and vegetables, in pregnant women in Africa, are scarce. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of cardiovascular lifestyle risk factors among pregnant women in Burkina Faso and identify their associated factors. Pregnant women who attended antenatal care services between Decem…
Yam Daabo interventions’ effects on postpartum family planning use in Burkina Faso at 24 months after childbirth
The trial registration number at the Pan African Clinical Trials Registry is PACTR201609001784334 . The date of the first registration is 27/09/2016
How do women, men, and health providers perceive interventions to influence men's engagement in maternal and newborn health? A qualitative evidence synthesis
Globally, there is growing awareness of the important contributions men can make as key stakeholders in maternal and newborn health (MNH), and increased investment in interventions designed to influence men's engagement to improve MNH outcomes. Interventions typically target men, women, couples or health providers, yet how these stakeholders perceive and experience interventions is not well understood and the fact that women may experience these …
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among men who have sex with men
Results from this first biological and behavioral survey among MSM in Burkina Faso suggest a need for programs to raise awareness among MSM and promote safer sex, particularly for young MSM to prevent HIV transmission. These programs would need support from donors for innovative actions such as promoting and providing pre-exposure prophylaxis, condoms and water-based lubricants, HIV counseling, testing, early treatment initiation and effective in…
