Cost of diabetes and hypertension care among patients in rural Bangladesh
Hypertension and diabetes impose significant health and economic burdens in low-and middle-income countries like Bangladesh. This study aimed to estimate both direct and indirect costs associated with hypertension and diabetes care in Dinajpur, a rural district of Bangladesh, and identify factors influencing these costs. This cross-sectional study used baseline data from a community survey conducted as part of an ongoing implementation research p…
Smokeless and combustible tobacco use among 148,944 South Asian adults
In this large population-based study of South Asian adults, rates of smoking and SLT use vary widely by country and gender. Men who use SLT products are more likely to abstain from smoking compared with those who do not

Loneliness, social isolation, and all-cause mortality in the United States
Social isolation and loneliness are both established risk factors for mortality, but it remains unclear how these two conditions interact with each other. We used data from 3975 adults aged 25-74 years who completed self-administered questionnaires (SAQs) for the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) National Study Wave 2 (2004-2006). Loneliness was measured by asking participants how often they felt lonely. A shortened version of the Berkman-Syme…
Increases in BMI and chronic pain for US adults in midlife, 1992 to 2016
Recent unprecedented increases in mortality and morbidity during midlife are often ascribed to rising despair in the US population. An alternative and less often examined explanation is that these trends reflect, at least in part, the lagged effects of the obesity epidemic. Adults in midlife today are more likely to live with obesity and have a greater cumulative exposure to excess adiposity during their lifetime than any previous generation. Pri…
Left‐behind villages, left‐behind children
Although the potential effects of migration on the cognitive development of children in origin communities reflect both household‐ and community‐level processes, few studies have examined how community‐level migration affects child cognitive development. By applying multilevel methods to nationally representative data of 2,248 children from 427 villages in China, we examine whether village migration intensity influences child cognitive ability an…
The role of motivation in predicting antiretroviral therapy adherence in China
Patient motivation is important in managing medication regimens such as antiretroviral treatment for HIV/AIDS. We tested whether self-determination theory could predict adherence behavior among 115 HIV-positive patients in the China Adherence through Technology Study, a randomized controlled trial of an intervention using text reminders and supportive counseling to increase adherence. Being in the treatment group had a significant effect on impro…
