Factors associated with unprotected anal sex with multiple non-steady partners in the past 12 months
Effective antiretroviral treatment drastically reduces HIV transmission for men diagnosed with HIV, irrespective of partner numbers. Apart from reducing partner numbers or increasing condom use no other recommendations are currently in place to reduce the risk of HIV acquisition and onward transmission for HIV-negative men practicing UAI with multiple partners. A range of factors were identified as associated with UAI with four or more partners w…
The Importance of Gender and Gender Nonconformity for Same-Sex-Attracted Dutch Youth's Perceived Experiences of Victimization Across Social Contexts
In this survey study, the impact of gender and gender nonconformity on Dutch same-sex-attracted youth's perceived experiences of same-sex sexuality-related victimization was systematically compared across social contexts. Participants were between ages 16 and 18 and enrolled in secondary education (n = 305). In contexts of school and strangers, boys and participants reporting more gender nonconformity reported more perceived experiences of victim…
International mobility, sexual behaviour and HIV-related characteristics of men who have sex with men residing in Belgium
The results of this study provide evidence for the role of international mobility and sexual behavior while travelling, in the spread of HIV and STI among MSM in Europe. Further, the findings underline the need for development of European cross-border HIV and STI interventions with coherent messages and prevention policies for MSM
The European Men-Who-Have-Sex-With-Men Internet Survey (Emis)
Community-based opportunistic self-completion surveying for sexual health programming is common among men-who-have-sex-with-men (MSM) in Europe, being used to generate evidence of unmet prevention need, for behavioural surveillance and as a platform for advocating HIV precautions. However, comparing survey findings across Europe is difficult because of varying measures and recruitment designs, and surveying has not occurred in all countries. EMIS…
Determinants of antiretroviral therapy adherence in northern Tanzania
This study underscores the importance of designing tailored, patient-centered adherence interventions to address challenges at the patient, family, community and health care level
Measuring adherence to antiretroviral therapy in northern Tanzania
MEMS-bottle use was readily accepted by patients. Although the MEMS-bottle was used accurately by most patients, patients need to be more explicitly instructed to continue MEMS-use when travelling. Even HIV-clinics with sufficient staff and free medication may impose structural adherence barriers by supplying an insufficient amount of pills
First Same-Sex Partner and the Internet
The present study examined the first episode of anal intercourse of young gay and bisexual men (YGBM) who were in the midst of their coming-out. Cross-sectional data regarding the first episode of anal intercourse were extracted from Outcomes, a longitudinal study on coming-out and sexual behavior of YGBM in the Netherlands. Overall, 45% of respondents reported unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) with their first same-sex partner. Rates of UAI did…
Social-cognitive determinants of condom use in a cohort of young gay and bisexual men
The aim of this prospective study was to identify relevant determinants of young gay and bisexual men's (YGBM) condom use when having anal sex with casual partners. Respondents (185 YGBM in the midst of their coming-out; mean age 18.9 years) completed an online questionnaire on social-cognitive determinants of condoms use derived from the theory of planned behavior (Ajzen, 1991) at Wave 1. At six months follow-up (Wave 2) sexual behavior with cas…
Effects of a short individually tailored counselling session for HIV prevention in gay and bisexual men receiving Hepatitis B vaccination
The fifteen-minute individually tailored counselling session was not only well accepted but also had a protective effect on risk behaviour after a follow-up of six months
Social-cognitive determinants of HIV risk-taking intentions among men who date men through the Internet
The present study was set up to investigate social-cognitive determinants of HIV-risk precautionary intentions among men who have sex with men (MSM), who meet sex partners on the Internet. Participants were enrolled through the major gay chat room in The Netherlands, www.chatboy.nl, and were asked to complete an online questionnaire. Theory of Planned Behaviour variables attitude, subjective norm, and perceived control explained 55% of the varian…
Sexual Decision-Making in HIV-Positive Men Who Have Sex with Men
Determinants of intended condom use with steady and casual sex partners were examined among Dutch HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM) (N = 296). Given the proposition that safer sex behavior among HIV-positive people is a form of prosocial behavior, the present study extended the general framework of the Theory of Planned Behavior with Schwartz's norm-activation theory and tested the assumption that personal norms would mediate the effec…

Sexuality and Sexual Risk Behavior in HIV-Positive Men Who Have Sex With Men
The purpose of this study was to examine the psychological processes pertaining to sexuality and sexual risk behavior among HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM). The authors analyzed transcripts of 30 semistructured interviews. Findings suggest that sexual problems in HIV-positive MSM might be primarily caused by the perceived risk of transmitting HIV to others. Furthermore, safer sexual behavior seems to be related to feelings of persona…

Chatters on the Internet
This study examined characteristics of men who use gay chat boxes on the Internet, including dating behaviour and sexual risk-taking with sex partners who were initially met through chatting. Men on chat boxes were asked to complete a brief questionnaire on the Internet. The questionnaire contained questions on demographics, chatting-related variables, and dating and risk-taking sexual behaviour. The results show that a large majority of the 190 …
Educational status and young Dutch gay men's beliefs about using condoms
The higher levels of HIV risk behaviour that have been found in young gay men with lower socio-economic status (SES, among others defined as educational achievement) may result from unequal effects of safer sex interventions. We conducted semi-structured focus group interviews with an educationally diverse sample of 113 young gay men living in The Netherlands. The objective was to bring to light men's salient ('accessible') beliefs about using co…
Evaluation of an HIV Prevention Intervention for Men Who Have Sex with Men at Cruising Areas in the Netherlands
Physicians' recommendations for mammography
OBJECTIVES. Message tailoring, based on individual needs and circumstances, is commonly used to enhance face-to-face patient counseling. Only recently has individual tailoring become feasible for printed messages. This study sought to determine whether printed tailored recommendations addressing women's specific screening and risk status and perceptions about breast cancer and mammography are more effective than standardized printed recommendatio…
