Leveraging medical, rehabilitation, and mental health expertise for integrated care pathways for pediatric somatic symptom and related disorders
Introduction: In pediatric somatic symptom and related disorders (SSRDs), children and adolescents experience and express distress through physical symptoms, leading to functional impairment. Symptoms can vary widely and may affect multiple systems, including the neurological, musculoskeletal, and gastrointestinal systems. Care for children with SSRDs is fragmented, poorly integrated, with only 40% of affected children receiving timely mental hea…
Clinical and psychological predictors of obstructive sleep apnoea in an Australian adult population with severe and complex obesity
This study contributes to the existing literature by reinforcing the association between older age, higher BMI, and increased odds of receiving an OSA diagnosis in a medically complex obesity sample. It also emphasises the importance of routinely screening for OSA risk factors, particularly in those presenting with high BMI and older age, which may contribute to early detection, early intervention, and improved outcomes
The Relationship Between Clients’ Perceptions of Therapists’ Cultural Comfort and Clients’ Hope
Cultural comfort, a component of multicultural orientation (MCO), remains underexplored in relation to client variables such as hope. A culturally comfortable therapist could help clients feel hopeful about reaching therapeutic goals. Being comfortable when discussing culture in treatment could help a client feel more agency and see paths to change with regard to all aspects of their identity. Therefore, we examined the relationship between cultu…
Implementing an integrated care pathway for Somatic Symptoms and Related Disorders (SSRDs) in paediatric population
Introduction: Somatic symptom and related disorders (SSRDs) are commonly encountered in pediatric hospital settings. These children and youth, who present with physical symptoms (e.g., headache, abdominal pain, dizziness) of emotional distress (e.g., anxiety, stress) are diagnostically and psychosocially complex, posing significant challenges for medical and behavioral health care providers. Children and adolescents with SSRDs have high health sy…
The effect of attentional bias modification training on food intake in overweight and obese women
This study modified food attentional biases via computerized attentional bias modification training and examined the effects on food intake. Overweight women were randomly allocated to (1) direct attention away from food ("attentional-training"), (2) direct attention at random to food or neutral ("placebo"), or (3) no training ("control"). Individuals then completed a taste test. Those in the attentional-training consumed on average 600 kJ less o…
Breaking bad habits by improving executive function in individuals with obesity
The RCT was registered with the Australian New Zealand Registry of Clinical Trials (trial id: ACTRN12613000537752 )
Body mass index and waist circumference predict health-related quality of life, but not satisfaction with life, in the elderly
Development and validation of the New Somatomorphic Matrix–Male
This study aimed to develop and examine the validity evidence of the New Somatomorphic Matrix-Male (NSM-M) as a measure of actual-ideal body discrepancy. The NSM-M is a visual matrix of 34 male bodies that vary along two dimensions: body fat percentage (range = 4-40%) and muscularity (fat-free mass index; range = 16.5-30 kg/m2; 36.4-66.1 lbs/m2). In Study 1, participants were 2,733 sexual minority males recruited via a geosocial networking smartp…
A randomised controlled trial of manualized cognitive remediation therapy in adult obesity
A review of the association between obesity and cognitive function across the lifespan
Recent research suggests that increased adiposity is associated with poor cognitive performance, independently of associated medical conditions. The evidence regarding this relationship is examined in this review article. A relatively consistent finding across the lifespan is that obesity is associated with cognitive deficits, especially in executive function, in children, adolescents and adults. However, as illustrated by contradictory studies, …
