The Paleoecology of the Australopithecus africanus Type Site at Taung, South Africa
In November of 1924, Robert Young delivered a “cercopithecid” skull from the Buxton-Norlim Limeworks, near Taung, in what is now the North West Province of South Africa, for description to Australian anatomist Raymond Dart, of the University of the Witwatersrand Medical School (Dart, 1925a; Tobias, 1985). This primate specimen turned out to be the first early hominin fossil ever recovered from Africa and the juvenile type specimen for Australopit…
Geology, Fauna, and Paleoenvironmental Reconstructions of the Makapansgat Limeworks Australopithecus africanus -Bearing Paleo-Cave
The Makapansgat Valley is located in Limpopo Province, South Africa (Figure 7.1), and is the northernmost of the South African australopithecine fossil sites. Hominin fossils were first recovered there in 1947, but the history and significance of the valley dates to the nineteenth century. The name of the site and valley derives from the Historic, or Gwasa, Cave at the head of the valley, which was the location of a siege in 1854 (Naidoo, 1987; E…
Environmental and Stratigraphic Bias in the Hominin Fossil Record
Comparisons between the hominin or Neogene mammal fossil record and contemporaneous paleoclimate proxies have been commonplace since the pioneering studies of Elisabeth Vrba (1980, 1992, 1995a, 1995b). Vrba combined the new macroevolutionary theories of punctuated equilibrium and species selection (e.g., Eldredge and Gould, 1972; Vrba, 1985b) with emerging evidence for global climate change in the Plio-Pleistocene (e.g., Shackleton et al., 1990) …
Stable isotope analysis of carnivores from the Turkana Basin, Kenya
Stable isotope palaeoecology of fossil mammals is a key research tool for understanding the environmental context of hominin evolution in the Plio-Pleistocene of Africa. Well studied mammal groups include bovids, suids, equids, proboscideans and primates, but to date there has been no in-depth study of modern and fossil carnivores. Here we produce an Africa-wide oxygen and carbon enamel isotope dataset for modern carnivores and compare it with fo…
Using springbok (Antidorcas) dietary proxies to reconstruct inferred palaeovegetational changes over 2 million years in Southern Africa
Assessing the paleoenvironmental potential of Pliocene to Holocene tufa deposits along the Ghaap Plateau escarpment (South Africa) using stable isotopes
The tufa deposits of the Ghaap Plateau escarpment provide a rich, yet minimally explored, geological archive of climate and environmental history coincident with hominin evolution in South Africa. This study examines the sedimentary and geochemical records of ancient and modern tufas from Buxton-Norlim Limeworks, Groot Kloof, and Gorrokop, to assess the potential of these sediments for providing reliable chronologies of high-resolution, paleoenvi…
Brief Communication
Following the discovery of the “Taung Child” ( Australopithecus africanus ) in 1924 in the Buxton‐Norlim Limeworks near Taung, the fossil‐bearing deposits associated with the Dart and Hrdlička pinnacles have been interpreted as the mined remnants of cave sediments that formed within the Plio–Pleistocene Thabaseek Tufa: either as a younger cave‐fill or as contemporaneous carapace caves. When combined with the Plio–Pleistocene dolomitic cave deposi…
Initial fossil discoveries from Hoogland, a new Pliocene primate-bearing karstic system in Gauteng Province, South Africa
Speleothem preservation and diagenesis in South African hominin sites implications for paleoenvironments and geochronology
Plio‐Pleistocene speleothems from australopithecine‐bearing caves of South Africa have the potential to yield paleoenvironmental and geochronological information using isotope geochemistry. Prior to such studies it is important to assess the preservation of geochemical signals within the calcitic and aragonitic speleothems, given the tendency of aragonitic speleothems to recrystallize to calcite. This study documents the geochemical suitability o…
