Sedimentology and geochronology of aeolian deposits on the Middle Negro River, northern Amazon, Brazil
Fields of sandy paleodunes have been identified in Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, and Guyana north of the South American continent. In this study, geochronological data obtained by optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) for paleodunes in the Middle Rio Negro region (Brazil) allowed the identification of two stages of dune deposition: the older from 169.74 ± 1.01 ka to 124.38 ± 0.91 ka and the younger from 18.89 ± 0.88 ka to 14.75 ± 0.77 ka. The ol…
Late Pleistocene lithostratigraphy and chronology of alluvial fan successions in the Tacutu graben (Boa Vista FM., Roraima, Brazil)
The Boa Vista Formation covers much of the Tacutu Basin in the central portion of Roraima state, northern Brazil. The genesis of this formation has been linked to geological and paleoclimatic events in the Amazon, and its stratigraphic positioning has been controversial, mainly due to the scarcity of geochronological data. In this context, the present study focuses on the geomorphological and distributional aspects of this formation in the outcro…
Relative base level control on the evolution of a Holocene lagoon system and its impact on the interpretation of the relative sea level curve (southernmost Brazil)
Coastal lagoons occur worldwide, most common in microtidal regions. Lagoon beach ridges might be good indicators of relative sea level fluctuations as they are formed during stillstands of the closely related lagoonal base level. Therefore, the objective of this work is twofold: (1) to identify the relative base level changes throughout the Holocene in the Estreito Paleolagoon, hence shedding light on its development stages; and (2) to use the os…
Stratigraphy and evolution of the late Pleistocene (MIS 5) coastal Barrier III in southern Brazil
The structure and origin of the Pleistocene (Marine Isotope Stage [MIS] 5) coastal Barrier III in southern Brazil were investigated through analysis of lithofacies, numerical ages, and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) data obtained in outcrops and subsurface deposits. The stratigraphic succession is characteristic of transgressive barriers, with muddy lagoon bottom facies unconformably overlying an older unit (Barrier II) and overlain by landward-d…
Relative sea level and wave energy changes recorded in a micro-tidal barrier in southern Brazil
Constructional sedimentary history of coastal barriers can provide insights regarding meteorological and oceanographic processes, and relative sea-level changes. We investigated the Holocene evolution of a segment of the Rio Grande do Sul Coastal Plain in southernmost Brazil. Data were obtained from ground-penetrating radargrams, optically stimulated luminescence dating, altimetry measurements, Google Earth imagery, and aerial photographs. These …
Late Pleistocene-Holocene diatomites from the coastal plain of southern Brazil
Firing temperature determination and thermoluminescence dating of a brick with cuneiform characters found in the ruins of Ancient Babylon
