Black-White Differences in Pregnancy Desire During the Transition to Adulthood
This article explores race differences in the desire to avoid pregnancy or become pregnant using survey data from a random sample of 914 young women (ages 18–22) living in a Michigan county and semi-structured interviews with a subsample of 60 of the women. In the survey data, desire for pregnancy, indifference, and ambivalence are very rare but are more prevalent among Black women than White women. In the semi-structured interviews, although few…
Intimate Relationship Dynamics and Changing Desire for Pregnancy Among Young Women
Young women's pregnancy desire changes depending on their intimate relationship context, across the range of relationships they experience during the transition to adulthood
Mediation Models of Pregnancy Desires and Unplanned Pregnancy in Young, Unmarried Women
This paper examines the proposition that sexual and contraceptive behaviours mediate the relationship between the pregnancy desires of young, unmarried women and their having an unplanned pregnancy. The sample consisted of 854 18- to 19-year-old women living in Michigan, USA. First, the positive and negative pregnancy desires of these women were measured, as were the women’s perceptions of the positive and negative desires of their sexual partner…
Do perceptions of their partners' childbearing desires affect young women's pregnancy risk? Further study of ambivalence
We explore whether young women's perceptions of their sexual partners' childbearing desires contribute to their risk of pregnancy. We used weekly journal data collected from 787 young women to measure their childbearing desires and their perceptions of their partners' childbearing desires. We then conducted hazard modelling to predict pregnancy risk with variables based on interactions between the women's desires and their perceived partners' des…
An implicit ambivalence-indifference dimension of childbearing desires in the National Survey of Family Growth
It is common in fertility surveys to ask women to retrospectively rate on a bipolar scale how much they wanted a pregnancy right before they became pregnant. Using a theoretical framework based on the interaction between positive and negative desires for p
The effects of ambivalent fertility desires on pregnancy risk in young women in the USA
Many different definitions of the construct of motivational ambivalence have appeared in the literature on reproductive health. Using a theoretical framework in which motivational ambivalence is defined as an interaction between positive and negative pregnancy desires, we propose two hypotheses. The first is that positive and negative pregnancy desires independently predict the risk of an unplanned pregnancy. The second is that ambivalence and th…
Refereed Articles - Differences between fertility desires and intentions
In previous research I have theorised that there is a three-step motivational sequence that drives fertility behaviour, beginning with motivational traits, continuing with fertility desires and concluding with fertility intentions. In this article I focus on four properties of fertility desires and intentions, examining some recent research findings that bear on the similarities and differences between these two constructs. The four properties in…
Biodemographic modeling of the links between fertility motivation and fertility outcomes in the NLSY79
In spite of long-held beliefs that traits related to reproductive success tend to become fixed by evolution with little or no genetic variation, there is now considerable evidence that the natural variation of fertility within populations is genetically influenced and that a portion of that influence is related to the motivational precursors to fertility. We conduct a two-stage analysis to examine these inferences in a time-ordered multivariate c…
Fertility Motivations of Youth Predict Later Fertility Outcomes
We examine how the motivational sequence that leads to childbearing predicts fertility outcomes across reproductive careers. Using a motivational traits-desires-intentions theoretical framework, we test a structural equation model using prospective male and female data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth. Specifically, we take motivational data collected during the 1979-1982 period, when the youths were in their teens and early twentie…
The effects of preconception desires and intentions on pregnancy wantedness
Preconception Motivation and Pregnancy Wantedness
This research was designed to increase our understanding of how the motivational antecedents to childbearing and emotional responses to pregnancy affect the subsequent attachment bond of a toddler to his or her mother. Using a sample of 1,364 mothers and their newborns from the Study of Early Child Care, we tested a mother-child influence framework hypothesized to mediate between the mother's preconception motivation and pregnancy wantedness and …
The measurement of childbearing motivation in couples considering the use of assisted reproductive technology
Relatively little is known about the motivational antecedents to the use of assisted reproductive technology (ART). In this paper we measure the fertility motivations of infertile couples who are considering the use of ART, using an established instrument, the Childbearing Questionnaire (CBQ). Our sample consists of 214 men and 216 women who were interviewed at home after an initial screening for ART but before making a final decision. We conduct…
Measuring the Childbearing Motivation of Couples Referred to the Shiraz Health Center for Premarital Examinations
Millions of children who were born during the first decade after the Islamic revolution in Iran are now reaching the age of marriage and childbearing. Short spacing between marriage and the birth of the first child has the potential to cause an excessive and costly increase in the growth of population in Iran. Research into the motivations for the birth of first child among newly married couples can create a knowledge base that will enable health…
A framework for modelling fertility motivation in couples
We present a theoretical framework that organizes individual-level fertility motivations into a couple-level model. One feature of this framework is the Traits-Desires-Intentions-Behaviour (TDIB) sequence through which the fertility motivations of individuals produce instrumental behaviours that are designed to promote or prevent childbearing. A second feature of this framework is the cognitive capacity of individuals to perceive a partner's moti…
The effect of the nurturant bonding system on child security of attachment and dependency
This paper uses a biopsychosocial theory of human bonding to explore the intergenerational transmission of bonding traits. More specifically, it examines how the nurturant bonding system of the mother affects the succorant bonding system of the young child. In the first section of the paper, we take the bonding framework proposed by Miller and Rodgers (2001) and elaborate its implications for mother-child dyads. Next, we describe the collection o…
Motivational antecedents to contraceptive method change following a pregnancy scare
In this study we develop and then test a couple model of contraceptive method choice decision-making following a pregnancy scare. The central constructs in our model are satisfaction with one's current method and confidence in the use of it. Downstream in the decision sequence, satisfaction and confidence predict desires and intentions to change methods. Upstream they are predicted by childbearing motivations, contraceptive attitudes, and the res…
Dopamine Receptor Genes Are Associated With Age at First Sexual Intercourse
The dopaminergic system in the brain seems to play an important role in the regulation of sexual behaviour. The relationship between genes for the D 1 , D 2 and D 4 dopamine receptors and age at first sexual intercourse (AFSI) was examined in a sample of 414 non-Hispanic, European–American men and women. A significant association was observed between a DRD2 allele and AFSI and an even stronger association when the DRD2 allele was interacted with …
Couple disagreement
This article focuses on how couple disagreement affects the translation of fertility desires into fertility intentions, and the implementation of fertility intentions through the initiation of proceptive behavior. We use data collected by interview from the husbands and wives of 201 married couples with no children, and 200 married couples with one child. Data were collected at four times, spanning a 3‐1/2‐year interval. The effect on fertility i…
Behavioral Intentions
The published literature on the relationship between behavioral intentions and fertility behavior exhibits four major problems: inconsistent and confusing use of theoretical constructs, limited use of different types of intentions, use of nonbehavioral outcomes, and failure to explore adequately the couple aspects of the intentions/behavior relationship. The study reported here addresses these problems by using a theoretical framework that charac…
Childbearing motivation and its measurement
This paper conceptualises the motive force behind human childbearing as originating in two broad traits which have biological bases, are shaped by experiences during early life and are expressed through their effect on desires and intentions. An instrument for measuring childbearing motivation, the Childbearing Questionnaire (CBQ), is presented. Using a sample of 401 married couples two main scales, nine subscales, and several independent items a…
How does childbearing affect fertility motivations and desires
This analysis examines the relationship between maternal determinants and birth weight in a population-based birth cohort of 5,284 mothers with singleton births of 28 completed gestational weeks in Qingdao, China, in 1992. Multiple linear regression models suggest that the length of the menstrual cycle, age at menarche, maternal weight, maternal height, parity, and number of antenatal visits had independent effects on birth weight after controlli…
Motivational and nonmotivational determinants of child-number desires
Personality traits and developmental experiences as antecedents of childbearing motivation
Childbearing motivation may be conceptualized as based upon psychological traits and shaped by experiences during childhood, adolescence, and early adult life. This paper explores what those traits and developmental experiences are. Two measures of childbearing motivation, one positive and the other negative, are described. Using a sample of 362 married men and 354 married women, the paper systematically examines the factors associated with these…
An Empirical Study of the Psychological Antecedents and Consequences of Induced Abortion
On the basis of empirical studies previously reported in the research literature, this article develops a theoretical model of the psychological antecedents of abortion and a family of related theoretical models of the long‐term psychological consequences of abortion. Then, using data collected during the mid‐1970s as part of a longitudinal study of 967 women living in the San Francisco Bay Area, these models are tested with multiple regression a…
A model of fertility motivation, desires, and expectations early in women's reproductive careers
We propose a general model of the relationships connecting fertility motivations, desires, and expectations in which motivations are antecedent to desires, which in turn are antecedent to expectations. We describe differences in the model as it applies to women early in their reproductive careers, specifically, after marriage but before their first birth and after their first birth but before their second. We test the model with data from 311 jus…

Chance, choice, and the future of reproduction
The evolution of reproduction has been characterized by the development of complex biological and behavioral mechanisms that serve to regulate chance events. Human reproduction has been characterized by the increasing importance of individual choice. Some contemporary manifestations of this broad trend are the high incidence of contraceptive and "proceptive" behavior among couples in Western, industrialized nations. The former behavior willingly …

Married women and contraceptive sterilization
Two hundred and fifty-five married women about to have a tubal ligation and 167 women whose husbands were about to have a vasectomy were interviewed about their decisions. The data were analysed to determine the factors with which pre-surgical ambivalence about the decision was associated. Three independent factors were indicated: a substantive factor related to childbearing motivations, attitudes, and beliefs; a processual factor related to the …
