A Geological Time Scale
Cambridge Spitsbergen Expedition, 1979
The 1979 Cambridge Spitsbergen expedition consisted of 13 members and was in the field from mid-June to late August. An advance party of seven left England on 18 June, arrived in Longyearbyen by scheduled flight, and then continued to the base building ‘Mexico’ in Ny-Alesund by chartered Cessna 185. The members were: W. B. Harland (expedition leader, geologist), P. Waddams (geologist), M. F.Chantrey (boat captain), S. G. Chandler (engineer), A. S…

Cambridge Spitsbergen Expedition, 1978
The 1978 Cambridge Spitsbergen Expedition was organized along similar lines to those of previous years by C. A. G. Pickton and was in the field from late June to mid-August. Expedition members were: W. B. Harland (leader), C. A. G. Pickton, I. J. Fairchild, P. F. Rawson, M. J. Hambrey and P. Waddams (geologists); T. H. Druitt, J. H. Barne and D. A. Waldron (geological assistants); R. Davies (engineer); N. Cox and J. Caner (boat captains)
Cambridge Spitsbergen Expedition, 1977
A Cambridge expedition was in Svalbard during late June, July and August 1977 and undertook geological field work concerning late Precambrian/Palaeozoic stratigraphy. One party of the expedition completed a small scale exploration drilling contract for a German industrial concern. Members of the expedition were: W. B. Harland (leader, geologist); C. A. G. Pickton (geologist/driller with Party D); N. J. R. Wright (Party D, geologist); K. Swett and…
Cambridge-Hamburg Svalbard Expedition, 1975
A joint geological expedition from the Department of Geology, University of Cambridge, and the Geologisch-Palontologisches Institut der Universitt Hamburg worked in Svalbard from 27 June to 12 September and was based at the building Mexico in Ny-lesund. The expedition totalled 17 members, was organized from Cambridge by Ailsa B. Reynolds, and was led by W. B. Harland

Cambridge Survey of Central Vestspitsbergen
The map of Central Vestspitsbergen (i: 125,000) recently published by the Royal Geographical Socie y,r aro e out of a series of expeditions organized for a variety of geological studies at Cambridge. Our first post-war expedition in 1949 was described in this Journal (118, 3 (1952) 309-31), and the map accompanying that paper was based on a triangulation which was begun then, and to which various pub? lished and unpublished surveys have since bee…

Palaeomagnetic investigation of Arctic rocks at Cambridge
Recent advances in rock magnetism have established the value of measuring the direction of the remanent magnetism of many kinds of rock. Provided certain conditions are satisfied, individual measurements relate to magnetic pole positions and sufficient measurements give a mean position which may indicate the geographical pole. Thus from determinations of a number of samples of rock from a geological formation, with suitable corrections, the latit…

On the Physiographical History of Western Szechwan with Special Reference to the Ice Age in the Red Basin
Design for a Sledge-Wheel
The wheel was constructed as shown in the accompanying sketch. It was made from a bicycle wheel and a thin sheet of iron 4 in. wide. The bolts fixing this tread on to the rim projected so as to grip the ice. An ordinary cyclometer was attached to the axle so as to “tick over” by contact with a projection on the spoke
