  • Maya Urban Activities during the Terminal Classic Collapse (AD 760–1000)

Open Access•Marie-Charlotte Arnauld, M Charlotte Arnauld et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2026

During the Terminal Classic period (AD 760–1000), Maya communities underwent a brief and violent political collapse, followed by a protracted period of instability that apparently culminated in an urban collapse as distinct from the earlier, political one. Rather than taking the kingdom or polity as the analytical unit, we propose to study the cities as actors in the collapse using the large and rich Terminal Classic datasets. A comprehensive dat…

    Open Access•M Charlotte Arnauld•ARTICLE•IdeAs•2024

  • Building an Archaeology of Maya Urbanism

Damien B Marken, M Charlotte Arnauld•BOOK•Building an Archaeology of Maya…•2023

After decades of debate, most scholars accept Classic Maya centers as the hearts of spatially expansive, low-density urban settlements. The recent incorporation of models derived from comparative urban research is a positive step for Maya archaeology, since it confronts the view that Maya cities were not only political capitals but also true urban phenomena, and must be treated as such. This volume seeks to explore the dynamics of Maya cities prima…

  • Defining Rurality at La Joyanca (Peten, Guatemala)

    Open Access•Eva Lemonnier, M Charlotte Arnauld•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•2022•Citada por: 6•Referências: 52

Considering the Classic Maya lowlands as an intricate landscape of nested settlements with cities, villages, and farmsteads in the middle of agricultural land, the rural/urban conceptual contrast would apparently apply, yet, is still debated. By combining detailed studies of the relationships between populations of both categories, one can better understand what rurality and urbanity meant in ancient Maya societies, and evaluate the dichotomy. Ju…

"Studies on population migration in central Mexico and the Maya region among Classic, Epiclassic, and Postclassic Mesoamerican societies within the framework of urbanization and de-urbanization showing that mobility and migration reveals about the formation, development, and decline of town- and city-based societies in the ancient world"

  • “In the days of my life.” Elite activity and interactions in the Maya lowlands from Classic to Early Postclassic times (the long ninth century, AD 760-920)

Open Access•Marie-Charlotte Arnauld, M Charlotte Arnauld et al.•ARTICLE•Journal de la Société des…•2017

As work continues on the archaeological and paleoenvironmental evidence relating to the end of the Classic period in the Maya Lowlands (traditionally dated AD 950), it appears that this “end” lasted too long—from 760 to 950-1050—to qualify as a brutal collapse. Certainly punctuated here and there by radical crises and ruptures, the temporal “transition” from the Classic to the Postclassic periods must be studied as a long and thick, or complex se…

  • Río Bec Settlement Patterns and Local Sociopolitical Organization

    Open Access•Philippe Nondédéo, M Charlotte Arnauld et al.•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•2013•Citada por: 22•Referências: 24

Based on settlement patterns in the Río Bec micro-region, a study zone (100 km2) focused on the eponymous site, there is no evidence that any of the monumental groups underwent true processes of significant, sustainable nucleation on a broad sociopolitical level. This paper analyzes Río Bec settlement patterns in order to better understand why processes of agglomeration did not occur at the site. Our approach to this question consists of analyzin…

  • Living Together in Río Bec Houses

    Open Access•M Charlotte Arnauld, Dominique Michelet et al.•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•2013•Citada por: 15•Referências: 75

In an attempt to interpret Classic Maya elite and commoner residential patterns beyond usual assumptions about filiation, family cycle, and household economic adaptation, we explore the specific ways people were “living together,” in the sense of the coresidence concept, in Maya societies conceived of as ranked societies, or “house societies,” as created by Claude Lévi-Strauss. Beyond kinship and economic organization, residential patterns can be…
