A comparison of labelling requirements for alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis across WHO regions and implications for alcohol labelling policy in Canada
BACKGROUND: Alcohol is a leading cause of global death and disability yet labelling requirements for alcohol products remain inconsistent across WHO Member States and comparatively weak in Canada, where Bill S-202 to mandate warnings is currently under review. In contrast, tobacco and cannabis are subject to more rigorous government mandated labelling requirements. This study compares federally-mandated labelling requirements for alcohol, tobacco…
A cross-national comparison of nonmedical and medical use of psychedelic drugs in the international cannabis policy study
BACKGROUND: We know little about the extent psychedelic substances are consumed therapeutically and/or discussed with medical professionals despite renewed global interest in these substances. METHODS: We examined self-reported responses from the 2023 International Cannabis Policy Study (ICPS) in repeated cross-sectional surveys in Canada, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. The survey included questions on lifetime, past year, and pas…
Examining use of restaurant nutrition information among adults living in England engaged in disordered eating or weight management efforts
Calorie labels on menus are a popular policy initiative to help consumers to reduce their energy intake. Consumers trying to improve their diet may benefit from the labels if they help inform eating decisions. However, it is not well known how some groups, such as those with disordered eating, may view a calorie labelling policy and engage with nutritional labels in England. Using 2021 International Food Policy Study data from 2,898 adults in Eng…
Exploring sociodemographic and nutrition-related correlates of meal-kit use across five countries
Objective: To assess the frequency and correlates of meal-kit use across five countries using population-level data. Design: Online surveys conducted in 2022 assessed meal-kit use in the past week. Binary logistic regression models examined sociodemographic and nutrition-related correlates of meal-kit use, including self-reported home meal preparation and cooking skills, commercially prepared meal consumption and healthy eating, weight change and…
Exploring THC labelling preferences to communicate the strength of cannabis products
These exploratory findings preliminarily support the potential value of standardized THC dose labelling, particularly in the form of a standardized metric such as the Standard THC Unit, as a tool to better inform consumer decision-making and promote safer patterns of use. The findings require replication in more representative samples using additional THC metrics, including but not limited to, THC milligrams as a response option

Disparities in children's sports participation and food advertising exposure in amateur sports settings in Canada
This study examined social disparities in sports team participation and self-reported exposure to food advertising in amateur sports settings in Canada and examined differences in exposure between Quebec (where commercial advertising directed to children under 13 years, including sponsorship, is restricted) and other provinces (where there are no restrictions). Children aged 10–17 years (n = 3672) completed a cross-sectional online survey in 2019…
Evaluating sugar-sweetened beverage tax effects
Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) introduced Canada’s first sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) tax in September 2022. Compared with national averages, NL has higher intakes of SSBs, lower intakes of plain water and milk, with higher rates of overweight and obesity and diabetes. Taxing SSBs is a recommended intervention but real-world effectiveness of SSB taxes requires more investigation. We evaluated changes in weekly beverage prices and sales pre- and…
Physical and online food outlet availability and its influence on out-of-home dietary behaviours in Great Britain
Neighbourhood outlet availability may influence out-of-home dietary behaviours, but its impact appears to weaken when OFDS availability is considered. Public health strategies should address the growing influence of OFDS platforms to improve dietary quality
Assessing the impact of a mandatory calorie labelling policy in out-of-home food outlets in England on consumer behaviour
The introduction of mandatory calorie labelling in England led to increases in self-reported noticing and using, with the key behavioural impact on ordering something different. Additional strategies may be required to maximise the public health benefits of calorie labelling
Association between the diagnosis of diet-related non-communicable diseases and the use of nutritional labeling among Mexican, Mexican American, and non-Mexican American adults
Diet-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are major global health concerns. Front-of-package warning labels (WLs) and nutrition facts labels (NFLs) aim to promote healthier food choices, yet their use among individuals with NCDs and across populations remains underexplored. This study uniquely compares two labeling systems (WL and NFL) and examines the association between NCD diagnosis and label use among Mexican, Mexican American, and non-Me…
Nicotine and tobacco-specific nitrosamine exposure among youth in England who smoke cigarettes and/or vape
Youth who vape are exposed to similar levels of nicotine as those who smoke or who dual use. NNAL exposure among youth who vape is much lower than among those who smoke and indistinguishable from youth who do not vape or smoke
Impact of standardising the colour and branding of vape devices on product appeal among young people
Standardising the colour and branding of disposable vaping devices reduces young people's interest in trying them. However, this includes a substantial impact on those who smoke
Perceptions and Use of Cannabis Vaping Products Amongst Youth
The impact of exposure to sugary drink marketing on youth brand preference and recall
Similar results were observed among children and adolescents within all countries. Global marketing policies should consider older children and adolescents to adequately protect and support child health
Children’s self-reported exposure to sugary beverage advertisements and association with intake across six countries before and during the Covid-19 pandemic
Exposure to digital advertisements for sugary beverages increased from 2019 to 2021 in most countries, and exposure was associated with sugary beverage intake. Reducing children's exposure to advertising of less healthy foods, including on digital media, may reduce sugary beverage intake
Pre-post implementation policy support for warnings on cigarette filters in Canada among adults who smoke cigarettes
Just as increased support has been found for a range of tobacco control policies post-implementation, we found increased support for warnings on cigarettes during the transition period. However, support for this policy among people who smoke remains low. Other countries considering implementing this policy may consider these findings
Awareness and perceived behaviour changes following the New York state vaping flavour ban, 2021–2022
Less than one-third of NY youth, regardless of vaping status, reported that an e-cigarette flavour ban was present where they live. Further, most youth who were aware of the ban misunderstood which flavours were restricted and/or that the ban applied to all stores that sold e-cigarettes. Increased enforcement and educational efforts could improve awareness and understanding of the NY e-cigarette flavour ban
Lived experiences of stigma and altered self-perceptions among young people who are addicted to ENDS
We extend earlier studies by probing the mental health burden ENDS use imposes on young people, offer new insights into how they experience addiction and outline potential policy responses. Measures reducing young people's access to ENDS are urgently needed alongside empathetic, youth-oriented cessation support
Canada's THC unit
The legalization of cannabis in Canada has accelerated the need for a standardized approach to measuring and communicating the amount of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in cannabis products. This article offers an overview of the considerations associated with establishing and implementing a standard THC unit in the Canadian context. The article begins by discussing the applications of a standard THC unit, emphasizing its potential use in prod…

Approximately one fifth of participants reported smoking less as a result of the labels; only 1% reported smoking more. Although participants reported negative emotional responses to the warnings including fear (44%) and disgust (58%), smokers who reported greater negative emotion were mo…
Causes and Consequences of a Tropical Forest Gold Rush in the Guiana Shield, South America
Statistical and spatial analyses of both historical time series and remotely sensed data show a link between the spatial distribution and growth of gold production across the Guiana Shield in northeast Amazonia. Results indicate that an exponential rise in production across an expanding area is primarily a delayed response to the 1971-1978 market flotation of international gold prices. The subsequent 10-fold (2-fold) average nominal (real) price …

How reactions to cigarette packet health warnings influence quitting
Objectives To examine prospectively the impact of health warnings on quitting activity. Design Five waves (2002–06) of a cohort survey where reactions to health warnings at one survey wave are used to predict cessation activity at the next wave, controlling for country (proxy for warning differences) and other factors. These analyses were replicated on four wave‐to‐wave transitions. Setting and participants Smokers from Australia, Canada, the Uni…
Socioeconomic disparities in quit intentions, quit attempts, and smoking abstinence among smokers in four western countries
INTRODUCTION: Lower socioeconomic status (SES) groups have higher rates of tobacco use, are less likely to successfully quit, and may also be less likely to intend or attempt to quit. However, results are inconsistent for some outcomes, and little is known about how socioeconomic disparities vary across countries and over time. METHODS: This study examined the associations between SES and quitting-related behaviors among representative samples of…
The alchemy of Marlboro
In fulfilling its obligations under Article 11 of the FCTC treaty, Mexico has passed federal regulations and joined a growing list of over 50 countries that have prohibited ‘light’ and ‘mild’ brand descriptors on cigarette packaging. Starting in September, the regulations will also require pictorial warning labels on the upper 30% of the cigarette package and text-only warnings on 100% of both one side and the back of the package. This legislatio…

Varenicline is a new prescription stop smoking medication (SSM) that has been available in the United States since August 1, 2006, in the United Kingdom and other European Union countries since December 5, 2006, in Canada since April 12, 2007, and in Australia since January 1, 2008. There are few population-based studies that have examined use rates of varenicline and other stop smoking medications. We report data from the ITC Four Country survey…
The use of cessation assistance among smokers from China
The use of formal help for smoking cessation is low in China. There is an urgent need to explore the use and effectiveness of stop-smoking medications in China and in other non-Western markets
Consumer perceptions of cigarette pack design in France
Novel cigarette packaging, in the form of limited edition packs, had the highest ratings of consumer appeal, ahead of regular branded packs and also PPs. Interestingly, PPs were perceived to be the packs most likely to promote cessation among those adults with quitting intentions. Plain packaging, therefore, may be a means of helping existing adult smokers motivated to quit to do so
Support for removal of point-of-purchase tobacco advertising and displays
This study serves as a timely reminder that the implementation of tobacco control measures, such as the removal of tobacco displays, appear to sustain support among smokers, those most likely to oppose such measures
Deadly in pink
Plain' packaging--removing colours and design elements--and removing descriptors such as 'slims' from packs may reduce brand appeal and thereby susceptibility to smoking among young women
