  • Scenarios and Schemas in Tandem

    Open Access•James Yoon, Chongwon Park•ARTICLE•Studia Linguistica•2026

This article proposes a hybrid framework that merges Panther & Thornburg's Scenario Model (SM) with Relational Morphology (RM) to account for the contrasting polysemy of English ‐er and Korean ‐ i . We propose that SM first flags whichever participant roles the discourse treats as salient. RM then stores every role that speakers actually conventionalize, representing each as a daughter schema in the existing lattice. Because all ‐ er daughters in…

  • Notes on word order variation in Korean

    Open Access•Chongwon Park, Jaehoon Yeon•ARTICLE•Pragmatics Quarterly Publication…•2024

This article aims to develop an analysis of scrambling or word order variation in Korean from a pragmatic/cognitive perspective. Although extensive research has been carried out on this issue, most extant research attempts to provide analyses of the phenomenon by identifying grammatical features posited for syntactic operations. Unlike the previous research, we demonstrate that word order variation needs to be understood with respect to its commu…

  • Korean Relative Clauses

    Open Access•Chongwon Park•ARTICLE•Studia Linguistica•2022

This article develops an analysis of three types of Korean Relative Clauses (RCs) from a Cognitive Grammar perspective. The three types under examination are the Internally Headed RC Construction (IHRCC), the Externally Headed RC Construction (EHRCC), and the Double RC Construction (DRCC) which is a subtype of the EHRCC. It is demonstrated that the notion of metonymy helps us properly tease out the nature and provide a uniform account of the hith…

  • Metonymy in the Korean internally headed relative clause construction

    Chongwon Park•ARTICLE•Linguistics Vanguard•2022

This article aims to analyze the Korean internally headed relative clause (IHRC) construction from a Cognitive Grammar perspective. The primary issue concerning the Korean IHRC construction is the mismatch between the syntactic object and the semantic head. While the whole embedded clause headed by kes functions as a grammatical object, the semantic head may acquire the object status. I demonstrate that the mismatch is nothing but a metonymic pro…

  • Nominative objects in Korean

    Open Access•Chongwon Park, J B Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2022•Referências: 37

This article addresses the hitherto neglected topic of the Korean Nominative Object Construction (NOC) within the Cognitive Grammar (CG) framework. In the NOC, schematically illustrated as [N-NOM N-NOM PSYCH-PRED], the second NP behaves like a direct object. While the construction has puzzled many researchers in different languages, and a sizable amount of research exists, relatively little attention has been paid to Korean. It is worth noting th…

  • Perceived barriers to implementing case management for medical‐aid beneficiaries in South Korea

Open Access•Jeonghyun Cho, Chongwon Park et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Social Care in the…•2021•Referências: 2

Medical aid (MA) in South Korea, a national public assistance scheme, provides minimum medical security for low-income families. The Korean government has adopted a case management (CM) programme to control MA beneficiaries' inappropriate medical use and enhance beneficiaries' quality of life. This study aimed to explore case managers' experiences of implementing CM for MA beneficiaries' potential barriers. This study employed a qualitative pheno…

  • Cognitive Grammar and English nominalization

    Open Access•Chongwon Park, Bridget Park•ARTICLE•Cognitive Linguistics•2017•Referências: 11

This article develops an analysis of event/result nominals and gerundives from a Cognitive Grammar perspective. By reviewing the previous research, we first point out that these phenomena are much more flexible than the extant research claims. Moreover, widely accepted generalizations concerning the phenomena are, at best, only partially true. We demonstrate that the said flexibility is ascribed to two different types of construals: [1] mass-like…

  • Reference-point and blending in Korean non-nominative subject constructions

    Chongwon Park•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•2014

This article examines three types of Korean constructions: case stacking and two types of non-nominative subject constructions. Relying on an independently established descriptive construct known as reference-point, I argue that the complex forms of these constructions reflect their meanings and functions. I further argue that the reference-point-based analysis of these constructions offers a unified account of a substantial range of phenomena wh…

  • Setting and location

    Chongwon Park•ARTICLE•Constructions and Frames•2013

This article provides an analysis of Korean adverbial case constructions from a Cognitive Grammar viewpoint. I argue that nominative-marked adverbials are the result of the setting-subject construal of the adverbial. Accusative-marked adverbials, then, are construed as a location, which is part of the setting. I also argue that the notion of setting-subject is associated with the imperfective construal of a given situation in conjunction with the…

  • Metonymy in grammar

    Chongwon Park•ARTICLE•Functions of Language•2013

This article focuses on the conceptual structures of Korean Multiple Object Constructions (MOCs), which exhibit various types of meanings. I argue that these various meanings are systematically explained when we adopt the notion of reference point. I claim that the accusative-marked nominals in the constructions are metonymically connected; outer accusative-marked nominals function as reference points. More specifically, NP1, in the schematic con…

  • Nominal and clausal grounding of Korean verbal nouns

    Open Access•Chongwon Park•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2013

This article examines how Korean verbal nouns are construed as either a noun or a verb in a given context. By adopting Langacker's Cognitive Grammar (CG) and its technical apparatus, I argue that the two types of case patterns arise due to different construals of the same content. More specifically, when a verbal noun is construed as a thing (noun), it needs to be nominally grounded to be a full nominal. The genitive-case pattern in verbal noun c…

  • (Inter)subjectification and Korean honorifics

    Chongwon Park•ARTICLE•Journal of Historical Pragmatics•2010•Citada por: 1

The traditional diachronic treatment of the Korean honorific marker LsupL is that LsupL was originally used as a referent honorific marker from the subject’s point of view. It then underwent changes to become a speaker-addressee-oriented (S-A) marker. Diverging from this traditional approach, I claim, based on a large-scale corpus-based study, that LsupL was used as a speaker-oriented marker as early as the fifteenth century. To account for Lsup-…
