  • Disciplinary tribes and the discourse of mainstream media expert opinion articles

Christoph A Hafner, Jaworska et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Linguistics Review•2025

Much applied linguistic research has investigated how experts from different disciplines – different “disciplinary tribes” – present knowledge claims, drawing on taken-for-granted disciplinary ideologies and epistemologies. However, this research has mainly focused on specialist to specialist communication rather than specialist to non-specialist communication. This article aims to fill this gap by examining a corpus of mainstream media “expert o…

  • Affective geographies and tribal epistemologies

Rodney H Jones, Jaworska et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Linguistics Review•2025

This paper explores the relationship between epistemologies, tribalism and affect in the experiences of Chinese international students studying in the UK during the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on data from student diaries, interviews, and focus groups, it explores how boundaries between in-groups and out-groups were erected and dismantled through processes of socio-temporal scaling, whereby social actors configured affective geographies by linking…

  • A Corpus Study of English Language Exam Texts

Open Access•Beverley Jennings, Daisy Powell et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescent & Adult…•2024

Students in England sit an important gateway examination in English at age 16. Major changes were made to this exam in 2017 resulting in more emphasis on the comprehension of unseen literary texts. This paper uses corpus linguistic methods to identify the kind of vocabulary encountered in these exam texts and compares it to the kind of vocabulary encountered in other sources of written language (classic literary fiction, biographies, poetry, etc.…

  • Crossing languages – crossing discourses

Open Access•Jaworska, Sylvia Jaworska et al.•ARTICLE•Pragmatics and Society•2018

Recent studies concerned with historical Germanisms have shown that public discourses in other languages often appropriate German loanwords as frames of reference to interpret political realities and influence collective attitudes. This paper intends to contribute to this new strand of research by investigating discursive transpositions of the historical Germanism Kulturkampf in the donor language, German, and two host languages, Polish and Engli…

  • Public discourses on multilingualism in the UK

    Open Access•Jaworska, Sylvia Jaworska et al.•ARTICLE•Language in Society•2018•Citada por: 8•Referências: 40

This article investigates public discourses of multilingualism in Britain. In contrast to previous research focusing on specific languages or varieties of language, we examine multilingualism as a metalinguistic construct and are interested in what is frequently said about multilingualism, and how it is said. More specifically, we explore the extent to which media discourses are consonant or diverge from the attitudes of lay people. Media discour…

  • Doing Well by Talking Good

Jaworska, Sylvia Jaworska et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Linguistics•2016

Using the novel technique of topic modelling, this paper examines thematic patterns and their changes over time in a large corpus of corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports produced in the oil sector. Whereas previous research on corporate communications has been small-scale or interested in selected lexical aspects and thematic categories identified ex ante, our approach allows for thematic patterns to emerge from the data. The analysis re…

  • Anti-Slavic imagery in German radical nationalist discourse at the turn of the twentieth century

    Jaworska, Sylvia Jaworska•ARTICLE•Patterns of Prejudice•2011•Citada por: 2

By applying methods of cognitive metaphor theory, Jaworska examines metaphorical scenarios employed in the discourse of anti-Slavism, which featured prominently in radical nationalist propaganda in Germany at the turn of the twentieth century. She does so by analysing metaphorical expressions used to refer to the Polish population living in the eastern provinces of Prussia, in the so-called Ostmark. Her article is based on an analysis of a range …
