What is Humility Good For? A Meta-Analysis of Humility, Health, and Well-Being
Humility, the organizing virtue of multicultural frameworks in counseling psychology, has traditionally been framed to be positively associated with health and well-being and negatively associated with mental illness. Despite lauded benefits, however, scholars have cautioned that humility may not always be of benefit. To examine these associations, we conducted a meta-analysis to clarify the magnitude of the associations between humility and phys…
The Elephant in the Room
This article discusses the use of the Multicultural Orientation Framework ( mco ) as an alternative to the concept of religious/spiritual competencies for therapists. We contrast the concept of competencies with the concept of orientation. We highlight the three pillars of mco : cultural humility, cultural opportunities, and cultural comfort. These pillars are applied to religious/spiritual interventions as well as the interpersonal stance of the…
The Therapy Progress Scale
Measurement-based care, an evidence-based practice endorsed by the American Psychological Association, is underpinned by routine assessment supporting a data-driven approach to clinical decision making.Nonetheless, there is a need for brief, nonproprietary measures assessing non-symptombased outcomes. The present study examined the psychometric properties of the Therapy Progress Scale (TPS), a four-item measure assessing clients' perceived treatme…
Microaggression Detection in Psychotherapy
Transgender and nonbinary (TGNB) people report experiencing discrimination from therapists. A step to reducing these microaggressions is for therapists to be able to identify them. Psychological trainees and psychologists ( n = 105) were randomly assigned to watch a video vignette therapy session: a session with (a) blatant therapist microaggressions (nonaffirming), (b) therapist-led transition focus (transition affirming), and (c) gender explora…
Meta‐analysis of couple therapy in non‐randomized clinical trial studies
Couple therapy has outperformed control conditions in randomized clinical trials (RCTs). However, there have been some questions whether couple treatment in naturalistic settings is as effective as those with more rigorous controls. The current meta‐analysis examined 48 studies of couple therapy in non‐randomized clinical trials. The pre–post effect size was Hedge's g = 0.522 for relational outcomes and Hedge's g = 0.587 for individual outcomes. …

Cultural Humility, Cultural Comfort, and Supervision Processes and Outcomes for Bipoc Supervisees
Clinical supervision is a cornerstone of clinical training, and supervision experiences are associated with important outcomes (e.g., stronger working alliances and more trainee disclosures in supervision). Psychology has made strides in understanding how cultural processes unfold in supervision, with the multicultural orientation (MCO) model garnering increasing empirical support, but less is known about the dynamics that occur based on racial d…
A randomized wait-list controlled trial of Men in Mind
Improved engagement of men in psychotherapy is an essential element in improving male health outcomes. This trial examined whether the Men in Mind intervention improved practitioners' self-rated clinical competencies to engage and respond to male clients in therapy. A parallel, single-blind, wait-list randomized controlled trial was conducted with Australian-based mental health practitioners, currently administering psychotherapy to males, fluent…
Impact and implementation findings from a cluster randomized trial of a youth relationship education curriculum
The current study presents implementation and impact data from a cluster randomized trial of a youth relationship education curriculum. High school students ( n = 1,135) were randomized at the school level to receive curricula‐as‐usual or a healthy relationships program delivered by facilitators who were not employed by the high schools. Program evaluators reported high engagement and students indicated high satisfaction with the program, but mul…
Protocol for a randomized controlled trial of the Men in Mind training for mental health practitioners to enhance their clinical competencies for working with male clients
The trial was registered prospectively with the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry on 3rd December 2021 (ACTRN12621001669886)

The Alliance–Outcome Association in Couple Therapy
The working alliance has been shown to be a robust predictor of couple therapy outcomes. However, there are still questions regarding the best way to conceptualize and analyze the association between the alliance and outcomes in the couple therapy context. This study presents results from a relatively novel analytic approach for evaluating the alliance and therapy outcomes via the shared influence model (i.e., common fate statistical methodology)…
Teaching Gender Competency with Men in Mind
Recognition of the importance of mental health practitioners’ enactment of ‘gender competency’ when working with men is growing. This article describes the development and theoretical background to a novel online training program for practitioners, called Men in Mind. The training focuses on men’s gender socialization, engaging male clients in therapy, and responding effectively to men’s depression and suicidality. The content of the training was…
Addressing racial equity in health psychology research
Health psychology research emphasizes biological and positivist methods, giving less attention to the multifaceted sociocultural and political forces at play in health processes and outcomes. In this article, we present a new sociostructural approach for working toward racial equity in health psychology research, consistent with public psychology goals. This new approach uses the multicultural orientation framework (MCO) to guide health psycholog…
Benchmarking Community‐Based Couple Therapy
Couple therapy has been shown to be effective in randomized clinical trials; however, results from naturalistic couple therapy have been less consistent. This study utilized a benchmarking approach to compare the effectiveness of couple therapy in a community‐based setting with findings from efficacy treatments, such as treatment within randomized clinical trials . The current study is the largest couple therapy sample published to date ( N = 3,3…

Cultural Humility as a Spiritually Focused Intervention in Correctional Settings
The role of religion/spirituality (R/S) in the lives of incarcerated individuals is complex. Inmates may draw on R/S as a coping strategy, as a way to place responsibility, or as an approach to creating meaning. The importance of using R/S as a coping strategy can be amplified in the context of a correctional setting. While some attention has focused on the effectiveness of faith-based services in jails and prisons, very little emphasis has been …
Cultural Humility with Religious and Spiritually Diverse Women of Color Clients
Cultural humility, as part of a therapist’s multicultural orientation, can help facilitate a strong working alliance with clients across diverse cultural backgrounds. Given that little research has attended to how the intersections of race/ethnicity, gender, and religion/spirituality (R/S) influence counseling dyads, we tested the factor structure and provided evidence for the reliability and construct validity of the Cultural Humility Scale (CHS…

The Revised Commitment Inventory
The Commitment Inventory measures interpersonal commitment (dedication) and constraint commitment. Since it was first published, substantial revisions have been made, but there are no published data on the psychometric properties of the new version. Furthermore, little information is available on measuring commitment for unmarried couples. This study examined the psychometric properties of the Commitment Inventory in 320 premarital or cohabiting …

Latino fathers
University of LouisvillePaternal involvement with children is associated with better outcomes for children andfamily functioning. There are, however, few data examining the intersection of culturalnorms and paternal involvement. For Latino fathers in the United States, paternalinvolvement may vary on the basis of cultural and gender norms, acculturation process, and ethnic identity. The current study used self-report surveys to examine the percep-…
Friends with benefits relationships as a start to exclusive romantic relationships
The current study examined whether young adults who start their exclusive romantic relationship via Friends with Benefits (FWB) relationships differed in relationship functioning from those who did not. After controlling for other salient predictors of relationship functioning (e.g., alcohol use, attachment style), young adults who were in FWB relationships prior to becoming exclusive reported lower relationship satisfaction when compared to youn…
Microaggressions and Women in Short-Term Psychotherapy
The current study retrospectively examined the relationship between female clients’ perceptions of microaggressions directed toward women, working alliance, and therapeutic outcomes ( N = 121). A measure, the Microaggressions Against Women Scale (MAWS), was developed specifically for this study, based on a content review of the literature, focus group, and a panel of seven female psychologists. A latent class factor analysis (returning one factor…

A new perspective on hooking up among college students
Hooking up is a common behavior among young adults. Studies examining predictors of hooking up have yielded mixed results. This prospective study ( N = 339) used latent class regression analysis to identify two distinct groups for which hooking up was predicted differently. In all, 30% of participants accounted for 74% of those reporting hooking up across the entire sample. They reported significantly higher levels of alcohol use and depressive s…
Stigma for Seeking Therapy
The current study examined the associations among clients’ perceptions of self- and social stigma for seeking help, session outcomes, and working alliance. Ninety-one clients were treated by 26 therapists, at a large university counseling center. All clients were currently in therapy. We expected that clients’ perceptions of self- and social stigma would be negatively associated with session outcomes and working alliance, after controlling for nu…

Cultural humility
Building on recent theory stressing multicultural orientation, as well as the development of virtues and dispositions associated with multicultural values, we introduce the construct of cultural humility, defined as having an interpersonal stance that is other-oriented rather than self-focused, characterized by respect and lack of superiority toward an individual's cultural background and experience. In 4 studies, we provide evidence for the esti…

Therapists’ Multicultural Orientation
Client perceptions of their therapists’ cultural humility have been associated with positive therapy outcomes; however, it is unclear whether these positive effects are consistent across clients. In particular, this study examines the extent to which clients’ religious commitment moderates the association between their perceptions of their therapists’ cultural humility and therapy outcomes. The sample included 45 clients, all of whom identified t…
