  • New data on the morphological traits of neanderthal teeth from the Stajnia Cave (Poland)

Open Access•W Nowaczewska, Gregorio Oxilia et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologiai Közlemények•2026

Background: Neanderthal fossils are rare, and in Poland they have been found at only two sites: Ciemna Cave and Stajnia Cave. At Stajnia Cave, nine Neanderthal teeth associated with Micoquian artefacts and dated to ~120,000–92,500 years ago were discovered. Although their morphology and taxonomic status have been confirmed, the internal morphological variation of Neanderthal teeth remains poorly understood. Objective: The main aim of our study is…

  • Fossil large mammals from Wielkopolska

Open Access•Adrian Marciszak, Wiktoria Gornig et al.•ARTICLE•Geographia Polonica•2024

A number of 125 open-air localities from Wielkopolska documented presence of 18 species (3 carnivores, 4 proboscideans, 3 perissodactyls and 8 artiodactyls). Most of species are cold-adapted members of mammoth fauna from the Late Pleistocene, such as Ursus arctos priscus, Mammuthus primigenius, Coelodonta antiquitatis, Equus ferus, Rangifer tarandus, and Bison priscus. The few species like Ursus arctos taubachensis, Palaeoloxodon antiquus and Ste…

  • New find of a Mesolithic antler axe from western Poland

Open Access•Tomasz Płonka, Marcin Diakowski et al.•ARTICLE•Sprawozdania Archeologiczne•2023•Citada por: 1

In 2017, a man fishing in the Oder River accidentally discovered an antler-base axe in the village of Domaszków, Lower Silesian Voivodeship. In-depth study of the axe included analysis of the traces on its surface, radiocarbon dating and paleogenetic analysis, and concluded with the tool’s conservation. Most of the traces casting light on the techniques used in its crafting had been eroded by intensive water action. The axe was made from the unsh…

    Andrzej Wiśniewski, J Wilczyński et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2022•Citada por: 1•Referências: 50

The hunting activities of Neanderthals inhabiting the European Lowlands during the Weichsel glaciation are poorly understood due to the scarcity of faunal remains. This work concerns the puzzling accumulation of mammalian remains at the Middle Palaeolithic site Haller Av. in Wrocław, southwestern Poland. The site yielded lithic artifacts in two levels and numerous bone remains typical for steppe-tundra fauna, dominated by steppe bison (Bison pris…

A cranium of a young female cave bear ( Ursus spelaeus R.) was found in the Upper Pleistocene sediments of Bear Cave in Kletno, SW Poland. A detailed analysis of the cranium, including radiology, CT and histological methods, revealed numerous pathological changes caused both by diseases and by injuries inflicted by another predator. It is likely that during its lifespan, the young female was exposed to several attacks (bites on the head) from adu…

The paper deals with remains of the elks Cervalces latifrons , Cervalces sp. and Alces alces from Middle and Late Pleistocene sites in Poland. A form of the genus Cervalces occurred in Poland from the early (Kozi Grzbiet, MIS 19–17) to the late Middle Pleistocene (Biśnik Cave, MIS 6 or MIS 5e). The genus Alces appeared in Poland in the Eemian Interglacial (Dziadowa Skala Cave). Compared to the other cervids, elk remains from Poland are very few, …
