Navigating the Algorithmic State
As the public sector increasingly adopts AI‐powered automated decision systems (ADS), understanding how citizens experience and value ADS use in public decision‐making is both normatively and practically important. Therefore, we examine and compare the effects of seven attributes of public values on citizens' support for ADS adoption in two real‐world policy areas: healthcare and criminal justice. The results of an online conjoint experiment with…
The impact of age-friendly home modifications on the well-being of older adults
With an ageing population, creating supportive environments for older adults is essential to sustaining their functionality and lifelong well-being. However, research on the impact of age-friendly home modifications on older adults’ well-being remains limited. To address this gap, this study examines the associations between age-friendly home modifications and well-being—conceptualised here as self-rated health and life satisfaction—within the fr…
Mitigating cyberbullying’s impact on children’s well-being
Extensive online exposure of children has led to an increasing incidence of cyberbullying, which can have adverse effects on their well-being. This study investigated the roles of digital literacy and cognitive emotion regulation (CER) strategies on children’s subjective well-being under different forms of cyberbullying experiences (i.e., perpetration, victimization, and bystander). Data were collected from 1767 primary students (49.12% girls) fr…
Fostering Community Resilience from the Grassroots
This research explores how individual factors, including intrinsic motivations, capabilities, and specific characteristics, shape both individual disaster preparedness and volunteering, representing private and altruistic coproduction in disasters. Analyzing data from 5,681 respondents in the 2022 US National Household Survey, logistic regression results reveal that group belonging and self-efficacy, identified as citizens’ intrinsic motivations,…

Facial expression analysis and machine learning for objective assessment of alcohol craving in alcohol use disorder
Developing an objective system for evaluating alcohol craving has the potential to enhance routine screening, differential diagnosis, and treatment monitoring in alcohol use disorder. Furthermore, integrating facial expression analysis with machine learning may enable the development of reliable craving assessment tools and treatment response prediction models. Such approaches could provide clinicians with evidence-based guidance for psychologica…
The association between childhood hunger experiences and health in middle and old age
CHEs had a negative impact on the health of middle and old age. While their effects on depression and cognitive function gradually worsen, the effects on self-assessed health and memory were mitigated over time. Lifestyle factors such as smoking, exercising, and sleep duration were transmitting factors of the health effects of CHEs. Thus, the health status of individuals who experience childhood hunger warrants attention
The Interpersonal Trust Characteristics of 4–6‐Year‐Old Children in the Trust Game
Interpersonal trust, a key factor in early social development, reflects children's expectations of others' reliability in social exchanges. However, existing research has not sufficiently characterized its dynamic mechanisms in preschoolers. Through three consecutive trust games ( N = 128, 128, and 142 children aged 4–6 years), this study systematically examined factors influencing trust in young children, including mechanisms of trust establishm…
The role of handwriting in English word acquisition among elementary students
In order to investigate whether handwriting has an advantage in learning word form, sound, and meaning, this study randomly selected 40 elementary school student participants (20 males, 20 females, aged 11.4 ± 1.34 years). Using an experimental approach, we compared the learning outcomes of word sound matching, word meaning matching, and word form judgment tasks under two conditions: handwriting and visual learning. After three consecutive days o…

Catastrophic health expenditure and its inequality in rural China
The incidence of CHE in rural China displayed an upward trend from 2013 to 2018, although it was not continuous. Furthermore, a strong pro-low-economic inequality in CHE existed in rural China. Mainly economic status, age, and chronic diseases contributed to this pro-low-economic inequality. Health policies to allocate resources and services are needed to satisfy the needs of rural households and provide more accessible and affordable health serv…
Normative reference data for body composition in healthy indigenous populations on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau
Body composition represents an important aspect of physical fitness and has received increasing attention in recent years. The present study was designed and conducted to provide reference values for age-, sex-, and altitude-specific body composition for healthy indigenous Tibetan adults living on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, which has not yet been studied. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 2,356 healthy Tibetan adults (1,433 females and…
Modulation of Attentional Bias to Drug and Affective Cues by Therapeutic and Neuropsychological Factors in Patients With Opioid Use Disorder on Methadone Maintenance Therapy
Objective: Abnormal selective attention to drug cues and negative affect is observed in patients with substance dependence, and it is closely associated with drug addiction and relapse. Methadone maintenance is an effective replacement therapy to treat heroin addiction, which significantly reduces the relapse rate. The present study examines whether the patients with opioid use disorder on chronic methadone maintenance therapy exhibit abnormal at…
Calculating Age-Standardized Death Rates Among People With HIV Comparable Across Jurisdictions and Over Time
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and local health jurisdictions have been using HIV surveillance data to monitor mortality among people with HIV in the United States with age-standardized death rates, but the principles of age standardization have not been consistently followed, making age standardization lose its purpose—comparison over time, across jurisdictions, or by other characteristics. We review the current practices o…

New York City (NYC) was an epicenter of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak in the United States during spring 2020 (1). During March-May 2020, approximately 203,000 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases were reported to the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH). To obtain more complete data, DOHMH used supplementary information sources and relied on direct data importation and matching of patient identifiers for data on …
Spatial–Temporal Evolution and Analysis of the Driving Force of Oil Palm Patterns in Malaysia from 2000 to 2018
Oil palm is the main cash crop grown in Malaysia, and palm oil plays an important role in the world oil market. A number of studies have used multisource remote sensing data to conduct research on oil palms in Malaysia, but there are a lack of long-term oil palm mapping studies, especially when the percentage of oil palm tree cover was higher than other plantations in Malaysia during the period of 2000–2012. To overcome this limitation, we used t…
