Beyond Laughter
Across five studies, we reveal consistent cultural differences in how humor is perceived, created and appreciated: compared to Americans, Chinese individuals were more likely to produce, appreciate, and associate humor with more profound meaning. Study 1 ( N = 298) used a free association paradigm and found a stronger tendency among Chinese than American participants to associate humor with meaningfulness. Study 2 ( N = 222) showed that humor gen…

The impact of modifiable social determinants on tuberculosis incidence
Addressing social determinants is critical to achieving the End TB Strategy targets. However, the impact of tuberculosis (TB) programmatic indicators amenable to short-term interventions on TB incidence remains underexplored. We aimed to identify modifiable social determinants and evaluate their impact on TB incidence in different risk-specific areas. We compiled individual-level surveillance data on reported pulmonary TB (PTB) cases and county-l…

Laughing off cyber spoofing
These findings suggest that self-deprecating humor can serve as an effective strategy for celebrities to navigate cyber spoofing, particularly when addressing a distant audience. The study highlights the role of social distance and perceived forgiveness in shaping audience responses, offering practical implications for celebrity image management on social media
Poverty Makes me Overwork
Despite a considerable body of literature on involution behavior, there has been an overlook of its measurement and predictors. We conducted two studies to address this issue. In Study 1, we developed an involution behavior scale through in-depth interview ( N = 26) and surveys ( N = 735). Based on grounded theory, the scale was categorized into three dimensions: meaningless work, compelled effort behavior, and health sacrificing behavior. In Stu…
Body mass index mediates the association between C-reactive protein-triglyceride glucose index and gallstone disease
Although the C-reactive protein-triglyceride glucose index (CTI) is recognized as a reliable biomarker for various diseases, its link to gallstone disease (GSD) has not been well characterized. This research explored the potential relationship between CTI and GSD prevalence using data from the 2017–2020 NHANES, with multivariate logistic regression and smoothed curve fitting employed. Subgroup analyses assessed consistency across demographics, an…

Cultural tightness reduces humor production
We hypothesized and tested in six studies that cultural tightness-strong social norms and low tolerance for deviance in a culture-would influence people's sense of humor, particularly humor production. Studies 1 ( N = 279) and 2 ( N = 278) demonstrated that participants from a tight culture (China) scored lower on humor production compared with participants from a loose culture (the United States). Study 3 ( N = 441) generalized the results to a …
Profiling student’s psychological capital and risk for learner burnout
The current study conducted the psychological capital profiles and the relation between profile memberships and learning burnout among undergraduates. Participants were 541 Chinese undergraduates ranging from 18 to 21 years old (48.2% male; Mean years = 19.54, SD = 1.09 years). Latent profile analysis revealed three categories of psychological capital profile consistent high psychological capital profile (50.5%), consistent low psychological capi…
Generative Steganography Based on Long Readable Text Generation
Text steganography has received a lot of attention in the application of covert communication. How to ensure desirable capacity and imperceptibility has become a key issue in text steganography. There are two typical approaches, i.e., text-selection-based steganography and text-generation-based steganography. However, the text-selection-based approaches generally have the very low hidden capacity and are not applicable in practical scenarios. Alt…

Toward an efficient determination of tissue-free water tritium in food
Introduction: Tritium in the environment constitutes a radiological concern because it can become part of the hydrogen pool in environmental and biological reservoirs and thereby expose people to radiation. Methods: Tissue-free water tritium (TFWT) analysis in food is an important subject of environmental radiation monitoring which plays an important role in the estimation of health risks from environmental tritium exposure. At present, tritium c…
The Impact of Culture and Social Distance on Humor Appreciation, Sharing, and Production
Building on the benign violation theory and self-construal theory, we conducted four studies to examine how culture and social distance would influence humor appreciation, sharing, and production. Study 1 found that Chinese participants appreciated and intended to share a joke involving distant others more than that involving close others. They also generated funnier titles for a joke involving distant others than close others. Studies 2a and 2b …

Relational Mobility and Problematic Internet Use
Problematic internet use (PIU) is a concerning issue worldwide, and a considerable body of knowledge has accrued from research on the predictors of PIU; however, few studies have investigated the dynamic process by which the social environment impacts individuals' PIU. Integrating a person-environment interactionist perspective with self-determination theory, we investigate how relational mobility impacts PIU by proposing a 'permeating' mechanism…
Multivariate Statistical Analysis for the Detection of Air Pollution Episodes in Chemical Industry Parks
Air pollution episodes (APEs) caused by excessive emissions from chemical industry parks (CIPs) have resulted in severe environmental damage in recent years. Therefore, it is of great importance to detect APEs timely and effectively using contaminant measurements from the air quality monitoring network (AQMN) in the CIP. Traditionally, APE can be detected by determining whether the contaminant concentration at any ambient monitoring station excee…
Therapeutic effect of baicalin on inflammatory bowel disease
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Baicalin (BI) is an important biologically active flavonoid isolated from the root of Scutellaria radix (Huang Qin). Traditionally Scutellaria radix was the common drug of dysentery. As the main flavonoid compound, there is a distribution tendency of baicalin to the intestinal tract and it has a protective effect on the gastrointestinal tract. AIM OF THE REVIEW: This review aims to compile up-to-date and comprehens…
Risk Factors of Skilled Nursing Facility Admissions and the Interrelation With Hospitalization and Amount of Informal Caregiving Received
BACKGROUND: The correlations between skilled nursing facility (SNF) admissions, number of hospitalizations, and informal caregiving hours received after adjusting for physical and cognitive function and sociodemographic covariates are not well understood. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to better understand risk factors for SNF admissions and the interrelation with hospitalizations and amount of informal caregiving received, this study…
MHz Radiofrequency Field Induces Mitochondrial Unfolded Protein Response in Mouse Bone Marrow Stem Cells
Objective: To examine whether exposure of mouse bone marrow stromal cells (BMSC) to 900 MHz radiofrequency fields used in mobile communication devices can induce mitochondrial unfolded protein response (UPR mt ). Methods: BMSCs were exposed to continuous wave 900 MHz radiofrequency fields (RF) at 120 μW/cm 2 power intensity for 4 h/d for 5 consecutive days. Cells in sham group (SH) were cultured in RF exposure system, but without RF radiation. Th…
