This article analyses the trial of Félicité, an enslaved woman in Port-au-Prince, who was convicted of theft and arson in 1787 and sentenced to be executed. The case is of interest to historians, as it is one of the few complete surviving records of slave testimony from Saint-Domingue. Despite much scholarship on the plantation economy, little attention has been paid to planter political rhetoric in colonial Haiti. By analyzing planter petitions, several lawsuits, and the colonial doléances of 1788–89, this article shows how landed proprietors harnessed natural rights jurisprudence and, in particular, Lockian ideas regarding the sacred right of private property. This article draws on evidence from the voluminous criminal and civil legal archives of Quebec between 1760 and 1820 to present the dynamic economic activity of married women in an expanding colonial economy. This stands as an alternative to histories which have seen women's entrepreneurship confined to single women or widows. This article challenges the conventional interpretation of the transition from French to British rule in Quebec, which has emphasised the increasing marginalisation of women in the colonial economy.
