Negotiating access to the labour market among mainland Chinese master’s students in Hong Kong
Part-time master’s students’ attitudes towards study and work
An increasing number of part-time adult learners have enrolled in master’s programmes globally for career advancement and personal growth. The educational and working backgrounds of these part-time master’s students are diverse. Their motivations for pursuing master’s degrees and continued learning are also varied. We explored part-time master’s students’ attitudes towards study and work through a qualitative research design based on semi-structu…
Motivations for pursuing a master’s degree and changing expectations of its returns
Language Variation and Perception
Subject pronoun expression (SPE) has been widely studied as a sociolinguistic variable across a range of languages. However, previous research has primarily focused on production, leaving the perception of subject pronouns largely unexplored. The perception of sociolinguistic variants not only reflects unconscious judgments towards linguistic features but also unveils the social meanings associated with these features. This study explores the per…
Sociolinguistic Competence by L2 Chinese Learners Through the Lens of Null Object Use
Using the analytical tool Rbrul, this study explores the object expression variations in the speech of twenty CSL (Chinese as a Second Language) learners whose first languages (L1) were English, Russian, Korean, and Japanese, and compares them to native speaker (NS) patterns. Multivariate analysis revealed that the learner patterns closely resembled NSs' in most dimensions explored, except the learners tended to overuse overt pronouns and underus…
Seeking meaning and purpose in the university-to-work transition
The article explores how students perceive the meaning of work and how they seek purpose in work during the challenging transition from university to work. Two rounds of interviews were conducted to observe the evolving nature of students’ work transitions. Twenty-six mainland Chinese students from various master’s programmes in Hong Kong participated in the first round of interviews; one year later, 12 of them participated in the second round of…

Career concerns and needs of mainland Chinese Master’s students in Hong Kong
This study explores the career concerns that confront mainland Chinese Master’s students in Hong Kong, and identifies their needs for career support. Forty mainland Chinese students from a wide range of Master’s programmes participated in semi-structured interviews, after which the qualitative data were subjected to phenomenological analysis. The results showed that most interviewees were uncertain about their career paths. The study contributes …
The use of le 了 in Mandarin Chinese oral discourse
le is the mostly widely studied aspect marker in Chinese. In addition to perfective aspect marker to indicate action completion, le can also serve as a sentence-final particle to indicate a currently relevant state. This study investigates how Chinese native speakers use le in oral discourse and the factors that influence their use. The data were collected from three discourses including informal conversations, elicited narratives, and teacher cl…
Exploring motivations of a master's degree pursuit in Hong Kong
This study explores student motivation to pursue a master's degree. It also explores how motivation differs based on the students' background, such as his or her study mode or place of origin. Qualitative data were collected through seventy semi‐structured interviews of master's students in various programmes in Hong Kong. The results of this study show that there are two main motivations for pursuing the master's degree in current economic and s…
Variation of subject pronominal expression in Mandarin Chinese
This study investigated the variation of subject pronominal expression in Mandarin Chinese. The data were collected from 20 speakers in three discourse contexts including informal conversations, elicited narratives, and teacher classroom speech. A multivariate analysis of 8,507 tokens revealed that the linguistic constraints that affect Chinese subject pronoun use include switch in subject referents, person/number/animacy of the subject, specific…
Variability in Chinese
DE (?) is the most widely used morphosyntactic particle in Chinese and its most salient features are multifunctionality and optionality. Most existing research is prescriptive and very few studies investigate how speakers actually use DE. This study describes Chinese speakers’ DE use and the effects of linguistic functions, gender, and formality. Results show that contrary to prescriptive claims, speakers occasionally omit DE from clause as modif…
Sociolinguistic Variation in the Speech of Learners of Chinese as a Second Language
With Chinese native‐speaker data as the baseline, this study investigates the use of the morphosyntactic particle DE by learners of Chinese as a second language. The general patterns are as follows: (a) DE tends to be deleted more in informal speech than in formal settings; (b) higher proficiency and longer residence in China—more interactions with native speakers—promote DE deletion; and (c) females tend to adopt more formal language style and u…
