The Effect of Task Complexity on Young EFL Learners’ Listening Comprehension and Metacognitive Awareness
The present study aims to explore the effect of task complexity on young L2 learners’ listening comprehension and metacognitive awareness. Eighty‐eight Korean elementary school students participated in the study, taking a listening comprehension test under two different complexity conditions and completing the Metacognitive Awareness Listening Questionnaire (MALQ). Correlation analyses indicated moderate positive relationships between MALQ subsca…
Linguistic influences on comprehensibility and accentedness in second language Korean speech
A considerable body of research has investigated the influence of linguistic variables on comprehensibility and accentedness in L2 speech. However, studies on this topic have overwhelmingly focused on L2 English, with little known about other L2s. This study investigated linguistic influences on accentedness and comprehensibility in L2 Korean. Participants included 198 L2 Korean speakers of varying proficiency levels and L1 and 82 L1 Korean liste…
Self-Assessment of Comprehensibility and Accentedness in Second Language Korean
This study investigated L2 Korean speakers' self-assessment of speech comprehensibility and accentedness, including a conceptual replication of Trofimovich, Isaacs, Kennedy, Saito, and Crowther (2016, Experiment 1) and exploratory analyses of individual differences in self-assessment. L2 Korean speakers (N = 198) self-assessed their comprehensibility and accentedness using 9-point scales, rated their satisfaction with their pronunciation and the …

The Effectiveness of Second Language Pronunciation Instruction
The goal of this study was to determine the overall effects of pronunciation instruction (PI) as well as the sources and extent of variance in observed effects. Toward this end, a comprehensive search for primary studies was conducted, yielding 86 unique reports testing the effects of PI. Each study was then coded on substantive and methodological features as well as study outcomes (Cohen’s d ). Aggregated results showed a generally large effect …
The Impact of Experience Abroad and Language Proficiency on Language Learning Anxiety
This study aims to investigate the effect of experience abroad and second language proficiency on foreign language classroom anxiety. Particularly, this study is an attempt to fill the gap in the literature about the affective outcomes after experiences abroad through the anxiety profiles of Korean learners of English as a foreign language ( EFL ) while taking second language (L2) proficiency into account. Of particular interest was the analysis …
Anxiety and EFL
The current study is motivated by the gap in the current literature about foreign language classroom anxiety, namely the underlying construct of FL anxiety with regard to the understudied relationship between anxiety, proficiency, and multilingualism. The evidence for the effect of language anxiety on achievement is well-documented. More recently, there has been evidence that anxiety is inversely proportional to the number of languages studied; h…
