Islamic gold sandwich glass
Sandwich glass is the product of a technique practised from antiquity. Essentially, decoration is achieved by laying gold to a glass surface, patterning this gold in various ways, and then adding a second layer of glass to encapsulate the gold pattern. The study of decorated glassware from the early Islamic period hinges very largely on the classification and dating of fragments, since few complete vessels have survived. Perhaps for this reason the subject, though full of interest for the glass historian, has received rather scant attention in the literature. Thirteenth‐century Islamic Enamelled Glass Found in Medieval Abingdon
Eight fragments of a glass beaker with enamel and gilt decoration have recently been found during an excavation in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. The beaker was obviously thirteenth‐century Islamic work, and a combination of several distinctive decorative elements serve to date it rather closely to the first years of the Mamluk period, circa 1250, and to suggest an Egyptian rather than Syrian provenance. This article is an attempt to establish a certain number of conclusions concerning the Dioscuri which are different from previous surmises. These conclusions are: First, an individual, on horseback or on foot, shown stabbing another figure beneath need not represent the triumph of good over evil, or the vanquishing of a foe, and in a set number of cases does not represent this. DURING the summer of 1959, a charming elderly lady of my acquaintance, related by marriage to the former ruling family of Yugoslavia, died. The following summer I was invited to attend a memorial service performed in her name. The date was the 12 June, corresponding to 30 May in the older Calendar followed by the Serbian Orthodox Church. The celebration took place in the municipal cemetery in Belgrade. It was, in fact, an anniversary celebration …
