Working memory exertion after simultaneous interpreting in bilinguals
Simultaneous interpreting (SI), a challenging task enabled by bilingualism, is claimed to distinctly tax working memory (WM). However, causal designs are missing, limiting our understanding of the phenomenon. We recruited 50 Chinese-English bilinguals and assessed their WM performance (alongside inhibitory and fluency outcomes) before and after L1–L2 SI or a control task (text comprehension). WM scores (especially under high-demand, multimodal co…

Unravelling the stylistic nuances
Style research has always been an important field in corpus-based translation studies. However, the stylistic differences between amateur and professional translations of epic Chinese martial arts fiction have received limited attention in the existing literature. This study addresses this gap by examining the stylistic differences in amateur and professional translations of the novel Legends of the Condor Heroes , a representative work of this g…
Style in speech and narration of two English translations of Hongloumeng
This study examines the style of two English translations of Hongloumeng , by David Hawkes, and Xianyi Yang and Gladys Yang. It makes use of multidimensional analysis to identify how the two translations differ in their sub-registers (narration and fictional speech). The results reveal that the Yangs’ translation of narration is relatively more narrative and context-independent, whereas Hawkes’ is more active and context-bound. Similarly, Hawkes’…
Family resemblance in translation
The theory of family resemblance is rarely mentioned in translation studies. Where it was, the legacy was strong. This paper revisits the legacy and renews the call for treating a translated text as a contextual variant of its original and as holding prototypical links with the latter. In this sense, the well-intended pursuits for translational equivalence seem to have overlooked the philosophical tension between the classic Aristotelian way of s…
