Four-quadrant analysis of universal health coverage progress in the Western Pacific region
BACKGROUND: Universal health coverage (UHC) progress in the Western Pacific Region (WPR) varies across countries and between service coverage (SDG 3.8.1) and financial hardship (SDG 3.8.2). OBJECTIVES: To characterize patterns and trajectories of UHC progress in the WPR, identify associated health-system and socioeconomic factors, and project progress to 2030. METHODS: This convergent mixed-methods study used data from the WHO, World Bank, and UN…

Retention of general practitioners with compulsory rural areas
BACKGROUND: The Chinese government initiated a compulsory services programme (CSP) to provide skilled general practitioners (GPs) to rural regions. This study examined the early career trajectories of medical graduates with compulsory services and the factors influencing their retention in primary healthcare facilities. METHODS: A cohort of CSP graduates from four universities in central and western China was established in 2015 to examine the ca…
Deciphering Characteristics of Bacterial Diversity and Potential Function in Acidic Soils of Jiaodong Peninsula, China
Soil acidification globally stressed agricultural production and food security. Jiaodong Peninsula, an important agricultural area of China, is also experiencing a serious soil acidity problem. However, There is limited knowledge regarding the differences of microbial diversity and functions in acidic soils in relation to land uses. Here, bacterial diversity and functions were compared between orchard and farmland soils of the Jiaodong region, in…
Longitudinal insights into comorbidity patterns and burden among middle-aged and older adults with diabetes in China
Background: China has the largest diabetic population, accounting for over a quarter of global cases. As a chronic condition frequently accompanied by comorbidities, diabetes requires research on the patterns and burdens of associated conditions, particularly within primary care settings. We aim to provide longitudinal insights into the evolution of comorbidity patterns and burdens among China's diabetic population, examining trends and influenci…
Geographic disparities in hospital readmissions
We found significant geographic disparities in hospital readmissions among high-need patients. Patients living farther from hospitals had significantly lower odds of readmissions. Readmission rates reflect patients' healthcare utilization patterns in rural and remote areas. Policymakers should address the geographic access barriers and be cautious when using readmission rates as a measure of hospital performance
Study on the development path of cultural tourism integration in Yubai Village in the context of rural revitalization
As a historical node on the coal transportation route along the Old Road of Western Beijing, Yubai Village served as an important business travel station. However, as time passed by, the Old Road of Western Beijing transport line gradually declined, the Mentougou District coal yard shut down, the service function of Yubai Village disappeared, and the local industry development became slow, necessitating revitalization of the village economy. At p…
Effects of monolingual and bilingual subtitles on L2 vocabulary acquisition
This study investigates the differential effects of monolingual (L1 or L2) and bilingual (L1+L2) subtitles on students’ receptive vocabulary acquisition. In light of the widespread use of bilingual subtitles in videos in language classrooms with limited supportive literature available, this study aims at examining the pedagogical effects of bilingual subtitles on receptive vocabulary acquisition in the L2 classroom. A seven-week quasi-experimenta…
The Influence of the Translator’s Cultural Identity on Translation
Gu Hongming was the first Chinese to independently and completely translate and introduce the Confucian scriptures to the West, and his English translation of The Analects of Confucius is one of his masterpieces. His values and approach to the translation of The Analects of Confucius were unique and closely related to his own mixed cultural identity. Taking Gu Hongming’s English translation of The Analects of Confucius as an example, it is import…
Changing inequity in health service utilization and financial burden among patients with hypertension in China
Health insurance expansion and poverty alleviation policies promoted equity in inpatient service utilization for hypertensive patients. However, the financial burden for the poor requires further attention through reimbursement policy adjustments for outpatient services in primary care settings
Poverty alleviation and health services for the poor in China
Poverty alleviation in China may have positive effect in improving poor people's access to health services, and reducing their financial burden due to illness and health service utilization
Reimagining Organicism
Does it make sense to refer to musical sounds as “animated beings”? What does it mean to treat music as an essential part of our sonic reality? How do Sciarrino’s music and his general aesthetic, both of which he describes as organic or ecological, respond to theories of organicism, ecological approaches to musical perception, and ties between the human and non-human worlds? In this article, I attempt to weave together a framework that facilitate…

Understanding Consumers’ Food Waste Reduction Behavior—A Study Based on Extended Norm Activation Theory
Based on norm activation theory, a research framework was built to explore the food waste reduction behavior when consumers eat out. The framework included behavior intentions and four psychological factors: awareness of consequence (persons understanding that actions have consequences), ascription of responsibility (duty to respond), self-efficacy (belief in own skills and capacity), personal norm (individuals' values to act by socially accepted…
Effects of Value Perception, Environmental Regulation and Their Interaction on the Improvement of Herdsmen’s Grassland Ecological Policy Satisfaction
Sustainable utilization of grassland resources was an important topic concerned by worldwide countries and regions, and ecological compensation had gradually become the main policy tool for grassland environmental management and ecological protection. This study adopted face-to-face interviews and questionnaires, and multiordered Logit model was then used to explore herdsmen's satisfaction with Grassland Ecological Conservation Subsidy and Reward…
Effect of Soil Solution Properties and Cu2+ Co-Existence on the Adsorption of Sulfadiazine onto Paddy Soil
Paddy soils are globally distributed and saturated with water long term, which is different from most terrestrial ecosystems. To better understand the environmental risks of antibiotics in paddy soils, this study chose sulfadiazine (SDZ) as a typical antibiotic. We investigated its adsorption behavior and the influence of soil solution properties, such as pH conditions, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), ionic concentrations (IC), and the co-existen…

The career characteristics of China’s prefectural environmental protection bureau heads with implication for the environmental governance
As the direct responsible cadre in China's local environmental management, the role of environmental protection bureau head (EPBH) is both critical and embarrassing. However, the profile of this group of cadres is largely unknown. This paper makes the first attempt to delineate China's prefectural EPBHs and find several distinct features. First, although advocated by the central authority, "be younger" has not been realized in the appointment of …
Willingness and Behaviors of Farmers’ Green Disposal of Pesticide Packaging Waste in Henan, China
Environmental pollution as a result of the improper disposal of pesticide packaging wastes (PPWs) has posed serious harm to groundwater, soil and public health. However, few studies focused on PPWs green disposal willingness and behaviors of farmers from the perspective of perceived value. Based on the first-hand data, collected from 635 farmers of grain-producing counties in Henan province of China, through the questionnaire survey method, this …
