Intentional Recreational Activities of Daily Living and Well‐Being in the General Population and in Psychosomatic Patients, Before and After Treatment
Mental illness can affect activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living, and recreational activities of daily living (RADL, e.g., sports, hobbies). RADL can have positive effects on psychological well‐being, and can therefore also intentionally be used to improve one's well‐being (IRADL, intentional recreational activities of daily living). In a German representative and a convenience sample, 2522 participants and 213 patien…
Embracing the psychological complexity of tinnitus-correlated distress
Chronic tinnitus presents a psychosomatic paradox: while the perceptual characteristics of the sound are often similar across individuals and typically linked to hearing loss, the distress it evokes differs substantially. This distress predicts the experiential quality, persistence, and chronification of tinnitus perception, thereby shaping what is recognised as chronic tinnitus or tinnitus disorder in clinical practice. In conceptualizing distre…
How Long Will This Heart Beat?”—Temporal Experiences of Adults With Congenital Heart Disease
Congenital heart disease (CHD) is one of the most prevalent congenital conditions. Over 90% of individuals with CHD now survive into adulthood, yet many experience physical limitations that can lead to a sense of exclusion from social participation. Existing research on adults with CHD highlights a profound sense of otherness and a strong desire for normalization. However, a systematic investigation into the experience of temporality in adults wi…
EPlanet – An educational game and platform for Planetary Health
WHAT WAS THE EDUCATIONAL CHALLENGE?: Planetary Health addresses the interconnections between environmental changes, social systems and human health. Despite its growing recognition, integration into medical education remains limited due to overloaded curricula and educators' unfamiliarity with the subject. WHAT WAS THE SOLUTION?: The ePlanet project developed modular, open-access educational tools, incorporating serious gaming and challenge-based…

Differential item functioning between English, German, and Spanish PROMIS® physical function ceiling items
Our findings support the universal applicability of PROMIS Physical Function items across general populations in Argentina, Germany, and the U.S. The sensitivity analyses indicate that the identification of DIF items was robust for different data analytic decisions. Multiverse analysis is a promising approach to address lack of clear cutoffs in DIF identification
Using a measurement type-independent metric to compare patterns of determinants between patient-reported versus performance-based physical function in hemodialysis patients
Patient-reported and performance-based assessments were similarly associated with an objective marker of physical impairment in hemodialysis patients. Age and fatigue may result in discrepancies when comparing performance-based and patient-reported scores on the common PF scale. Trial Registration CONVINCE is registered in the Dutch Trial Register (Register ID: NL64750.041.18). The registration can be accessed at: https://onderzoekmetmensen.nl/en…

Our findings confirm most of the results of the pilot study. These findings can facilitate the development of stratified treatment approaches for eating disorders
PROMIS-29 and EORTC QLQ-C30
EORTC QLQ-C30 and PROMIS-29 showed similar scores and satisfactory agreement in conceptional and statistical analysis. This suggests that the underlying conceptualization of health is reasonably close. Hence, the development of score transformation algorithms or calibration of both instruments on common scales could prospectively increase the comparability of clinical and research PRO data collected with either instrument

EORTC QLQ-C30 general population normative data for Italy by sex, age and health condition
The Italian normative values for the EORTC QLQ-C30 scales support the interpretation of HRQoL profiles in Italian cancer populations. The strong impact of health conditions on EORTC QLQ-C30 scores highlights the importance of adjusting for the impact of comorbidities in cancer patients when interpreting HRQoL data
Applying Item Response Theory to the OPD Structure Questionnaire
Recent developments in the dimensional assessment of personality functioning have made the implementation of latent measurement models increasingly attractive. In this study, we applied item response theory (IRT) to a well-established personality functioning instrument (the OPD Structure Questionnaire) to identify a unidimensional latent trait and to evaluate the feasibility of computer adaptive testing (CAT). We hypothesized that the use of IRT …
Executive Functions and Attention in Patients With Psychogenic Nonepileptic Seizures Compared With Healthy Controls
OBJECTIVE: Psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNESs) are considered functional neurological symptoms and are highly prevalent in specialized epilepsy clinics. The underlying mechanisms of PNES are not fully understood. Recent findings point toward possible alterations in attention and executive functions. This study aimed to extend the current knowledge of attention and executive function in patients with PNES and to assess possible relationships…
Patients Characteristics and Psychosocial Treatment in Psychodynamic and Cognitive Behavior Therapy
Introduction: The most prevalent psychotherapy schools are psychodynamic (PDT) and cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). There are no scientific guidelines on which type of patient should be treated by which therapist, and how they can find the best one. Part of the answer can be derived from data on who is treated in which way. Objective: Objective of this study was to compare patients in routine PDT and CBT to describe similarities and differences …
Multimodal Psychotherapeutic Inpatient Therapy of Depression Is Successful in Patients With High Cytokine Production
Objective: In experimental settings, systemically elevated inflammation markers interfere with major depression treatment. In German healthcare, compulsory national health insurance covers treatment of a wide variety of depressive disorders, if it follows evidence-based medicine guidelines combining recommended therapies. To date, little is known about the relevance of immune system cytokine production with regard to real-world clinical care for …
Scoring Depression on a Common Metric
There are a growing number of item response theory (IRT) studies that calibrate different patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures, such as anxiety, depression, physical function, and pain, on common, instrument-independent metrics. In the case of depression, it has been reported that there are considerable mean score differences when scoring on a common metric from different, previously linked instruments. Ideally, those estimates should be the s…

Subjective experience of relaxation - induced by vibroacoustic stimulation by a Body Monochord or CD music - a randomised, controlled study in patients with psychosomatic disorders
Vibroacoustic stimulation via a Body Monochord can induce states of relaxation and subjective well-being. Sometimes unpleasant experiences such as fear, loss of control and unpleasant imagery can occur. Previous results were mainly deduced from investigations in healthy subjects. In this study, we examined psychosomatic patients’ subjective experiences during a single treatment with a Body Monochord in comparison to a listening session of relaxati…

Impact of Cross-Calibration Methods on the Interpretation of a Treatment Comparison Study Using 2 Depression Scales
BACKGROUND: Many questionnaires assessing depressive symptoms are available. Most of these questionnaires are constructed based on classical test theory, making comparisons of individual scores difficult. Item response theory (IRT) allows the comparison of scores from different instruments. In this study, the impact of IRT-based cross-calibration methods on the results of a treatment outcome study was evaluated using 2 instruments. METHODS: Data …
