Maternal wellbeing amidst English fever
This study explored maternal wellbeing in the context of intensive maternal involvement in children's English education in South Korea, a setting characterised by neoliberal educational pressures. It highlights how individual wellbeing intersects with broader institutional pressures and social ideologies. The omission of maternal wellbeing in applied linguistics is surprising because mothers often fulfil conflicting roles such as a study supervis…
Learning honorific request-making expressions in Korean during mobile text-chat tasks
Linguistic alignment that occurs during interaction has been found to be a useful language learning mechanism. Recent second language (L2) research on alignment has primarily focused on syntactic alignment in face-to-face oral interactions (Kim & Michel, 2023). This study expands the scope of L2 alignment research by examining pragmatic alignment in group mobile text-chat tasks conducted in Korean. Furthermore, it investigates how the source of a…
Understanding consumer behavior and strategies for adopting reusable packaging in food delivery
This study explores the factors that affect consumer adoption of reusable packaging in South Korea’s food delivery market. Adopting a mixed-method that includes interviews and an online survey of 137 consumers aged 18 to 30, the analysis, using an ordered probit model, reveals key drivers of the likelihood of switching to food delivery services using reusable packaging. Positive influences include environmental concerns, intention to take action …
Does the attractiveness of K‐culture shape the enjoyment of foreign language learners of Korean
Attraction to the target culture can be a reason to study the language, especially in the case of languages other than English (LOTEs). Recently, the number of Korean language learners has surged alongside the growing popularity of Korean pop culture (K‐pop). However, it is unknown whether the initial attraction to the culture and the first steps in that direction shape foreign language (FL) emotions in the longer term. To fill this gap, this mix…
Motivations for Learning Korean in Vietnam
Although contextual influences on L2 motivation have been widely acknowledged, studies of underrepresented learners of less-commonly-taught languages have been extremely rare. To fill this gap, this study aimed to promote the local understanding of motivation among Vietnamese learners of Korean within the theoretical framework of L2 selves and regulatory focus. In particular, this study qualitatively explored L2 selves through an open-ended quest…
A neural basis of unpleasant emotional processing in modified guided imagery and music
Introduction: Music and imagery are often used as stimuli in emotionally focused therapy to induce personal emotions, especially unpleasant emotions, which are related to personal episodic memories. In this study, we designed an fMRI study to demonstrate the enhancement effect of unpleasant emotions by modified guided imagery and music (GIM), which is a music psychotherapy approach utilizing music and imagery. Methods: Music excerpts and verbal in…
