Open Access•Garazi Zulaika, Miriam Bulbarelli et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2022

INTRODUCTION: Secondary school closures aimed at limiting the number of infections and deaths due to COVID-19 may have amplified the negative sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and schooling outcomes of vulnerable adolescent girls. This study aimed to measure pandemic-related effects on adolescent pregnancy and school dropout among school-going girls in Kenya. METHODS: We report longitudinal findings of 910 girls in their last 2 years of second…

  • ‘You don’t have to sleep with a man to get how to survive’

Open Access•Linda Mason, Garazi Zulaika et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2022

In sub-Saharan Africa, girls suffer from high rates of morbidity and mortality, enduring high exposure to sexual and reproductive health harms. Staying in school helps protect girls from such harms. Focus group discussions were conducted in a rural, impoverished area of Kenya with adolescent girls participating in a 4-arm cluster randomised controlled trial, evaluating menstrual cups, cash transfer, or combined cups plus cash transfer against con…

Open Access•Maureen Vowles, Ruth Kerry et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Rising adult asthma prevalence (AAP) rates and asthma emergency room (AER) visits constitute a large burden on public health in Utah (UT), a high-altitude state in the Great Basin Desert, USA. This warrants an investigation of the characteristics of the counties with the highest asthma burden within UT to improve allocation of health resources and for planning. The relations between several predictor environmental, health behavior and socio-econo…

Our study was nested within a cluster randomized controlled pilot feasibility study where nurses provided menstrual items to schoolgirls. We observed the WASH conditions of 30…

  • An increase in the burden of neonatal admissions to a rural district hospital in Kenya over 19 years

Open Access•Michael Mwaniki, Michael K Mwaniki et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2010

There is clear evidence of increasing burden in neonatal admissions at a rural district hospital in contrast to reducing numbers of non-neonatal paediatrics' admissions aged ≤ 5 years. Though the inpatient case fatality for all admissions aged ≤ 5 years declined significantly, neonates now comprise close to 60% of all inpatient deaths. Simple indicators may identify neonates at risk of death

  • Risk factors for low birthweight in the public-hospitals at Peshawar, NWFP-Pakistan

Open Access•Sareer Badshah, Linda Mason et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2008

In addition to gestational age, specific factors related to geo-demographics (maternal age, consanguinity and nationality), maternal health (anaemia) and pregnancy history (abortion/miscarriage) were significantly associated with the incidence of LBW observed at the four hospitals surveyed in Peshawar. These results indicate that cultural factors can adversely affect the incidence of SGA in this area of Pakistan
