How Did We Get Here? Racial Reckoning To Racist RetrenchmentIn the summer of 2020, widespread protests against systemic racism swept the nation and the world in the aftermath of the police killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. These protests built upon decades and centuries of collective resistance against racial injustice, and they also signaled a shift.People and communities that had never protested before-and had never uttered the words …
Impact of Adolescent Personality Disorders on Obesity 17 Years Later
OBJECTIVES: To investigate associations between adolescent personality disorder (PD) and obesity 17 years later. METHODS: The Children in the Community is a longitudinal study based on a randomly sampled cohort of families, in effect since 1975. PDs were assessed in youths by self-report and mother report in 1985 to 1986, when participants were at an average age of 16 years. Obesity was assessed in 2001 to 2004 when participants were an average a…
Applied Multiple Regression/Correlation Analysis for the Behavioral Sciences
This classic text on multiple regression is noted for its nonmathematical, applied, and data-analytic approach. Readers profit from its verbal-conceptual exposition and frequent use of examples. The applied emphasis provides clear illustrations of the principles and provides worked examples of the types of applications that are possible. Researchers learn how to specify regression models that directly address their research questions. An overview…

Maternal anxiety symptoms and mother–infant self‐ and interactive contingency
Associations of maternal self‐report anxiety‐related symptoms with mother–infant 4‐month face‐to‐face play were investigated in 119 pairs. Attention, affect, spatial orientation, and touch were coded from split‐screen videotape on a 1‐s time base. Self‐ and interactive contingency were assessed by time‐series methods. Because anxiety symptoms signal emotional dysregulation, we expected to find atypical patterns of mother–infant interactive contin…
How Big is a Big Odds Ratio? Interpreting the Magnitudes of Odds Ratios in Epidemiological Studies
The odds ratio (OR) is probably the most widely used index of effect size in epidemiological studies. The difficulty of interpreting the OR has troubled many clinical researchers and epidemiologists for a long time. We propose a new method for interpreting the size of the OR by relating it to differences in a normal standard deviate. Our calculations indicate that OR = 1.68, 3.47, and 6.71 are equivalent to Cohen's d = 0.2 (small), 0.5 (medium), …
The origins of 12-month attachment
A microanalysis of 4-month mother-infant face-to-face communication revealed a fine-grained specification of communication processes that predicted 12-month insecure attachment outcomes, particularly resistant and disorganized classifications. An urban community sample of 84 dyads were videotaped at 4 months during a face-to-face interaction, and at 12 months during the Ainsworth Strange Situation. Four-month mother and infant communication modal…

Infant and mother face, gaze, touch, and vocal quality were coded second by second from split-screen videotape. Self- and interactive contingencies were defined as auto- and lagged cross-correlation, respectively, using multilevel time-series models. Statis…
Predicting conflict within romantic relationships during the transition to adulthood
We conducted a retrospective study between 1997 and 2000 with 200 participants in the Children in the Community Study at their mean age of 29 (range: 27–31 years). Participants completed detailed narrative interviews about their transition to adulthood and described monthly levels of partner conflict that had occurred between ages 17 and 27. Data from these interviews were used to investigate the developmental trajectory and predictors of conflic…
Exposure to the World Trade Center Attack and the Use of Cigarettes and Alcohol Among New York City Public High-School Students
We examined exposure to the World Trade Center attack and changes in cigarette smoking and drinking among 2731 New York City public high-school students evaluated 6 months after the attack. Increased drinking was associated with direct exposure to the World Trade Center attack (P
Gender differences in the age-changing relationship between instrumentality and family contact in emerging adulthood
Data from the Children in the Community Transitions Study were used to examine gender differences in the impact of family contact on the development of finance and romance instrumentality from ages 17 to 27 years. Family contact decreased among both men and women across emerging adulthood, although it decreased more rapidly in men than in women. Both finance and romance instrumentality increased for men and women across emerging adulthood. The gr…
Social role and birth cohort influences on gender-linked personality traits in women
Growth curve modeling was used to examine the impact of social role experiences (e.g., marital support, occupational prestige) and birth cohort on mean-level differences and age-related changes in positive personality traits indicative of either femininity or masculinity in 758 mothers heterogeneous in age, assessed 4 times over 2 decades. Both femininity and masculinity increased significantly from mean ages 39 through 59; each was predictive of…
Implications of Identification with Parents and Parents' Acceptance for Adolescent and Young Adult Self-esteem
Although several authors have suggested that youths' identification with their parents plays an important role in how they come to evaluate themselves, this hypothesis has not been explored empirically in longitudinal research. Using prospective data from a representative community sample, we tested whether the association between adolescents' identification with mother and father and subsequent gains in global self-esteem would hinge on the pare…
The Role of Parent and Peer Support in Predicting Adolescent Depression
This study examines whether perceived parent support, peer support, and the interaction between them predict depression symptoms and depression diagnosis 2 years later in a community sample of 389 adolescents. Controlling for Time 1 depression, parent support and anticipated peer support were not independently related to Time 2 depression in either linear or logistic regression analyses. However, there was a significant interaction between the tw…

Variations in patterns of developmental transmissions in the emerging adulthood period
The assumption of adult roles has largely been examined as status changes in school attendance, leaving the parental home, and marriage. Nevertheless, levels of autonomy and individuation vary considerably within these states. This study obtained such information through narrative behavioral descriptions within financial, residential, romantic, and family formation domains covering ages 17 to 27 years. Analyses of data from 240 members of a commu…
Intergenerational transmission of partner violence
An unselected sample of 543 children was followed over 20 years to test the independent effects of parenting, exposure to domestic violence between parents (ETDV), maltreatment, adolescent disruptive behavior disorders, and emerging adult substance abuse disorders (SUDs) on the risk of violence to and from an adult partner. Conduct disorder (CD) was the strongest risk for perpetrating partner violence for both sexes, followed by ETDV, and power a…

An Assessment Of The Impact Of Economic Factors On Planned Fertility In New York City, 1970
The economic theory of fertility predicts that fertility will be positively related to financial resources and negatively related to child costs. This theory is shown to be, in essence, a motivational theory, and as such relevant to predicting planned fertility but not necessarily unplanned childbearing. It is also expected that neither the probability of planned parenthood nor the influence of economic factors will be constant across all age gro…
A Comparison Of The Validity Of Two Explanatory Models Relating Female Income To Fertility
The demonstrated negative relationship between women's income and fertility has typically been treated as primarily a consequence of economic loss associated with maternity. A plausible alternative interpretation attributes a causal role to the psychic benefits which may be associated with women's employment. These two interpretations lead to somewhat different predictions regarding the shape of the fertility-female income relationship, the effec…
Inefficient Redundancy
Two articles on canonical correlation are criticized as erroneous, Wood (1972) and Nicewander & Wood (1974). In both instances, the errors would have been avoided had the authors been required to offer both the mathematical basis of their contributions and illustrative worked examples
