Branch banking and regional financial markets
In Japan in the 1920s, several financial crises and government policy led to bank mergers and the consolidation and expansion of branch networks. Using unique historical bank branch-level lending and deposit data, we show that branch banking integrated peripheral markets with the rest of the country, with large urban banks – those headquartered in Tokyo and Osaka – using deposit supply shocks in peripheral areas to fund lending in their core mark…

Large Fires and the Rise of Fire Insurance in Early Twentieth-Century Japan
We explore the role that large fires played in the early development of the Japanese fire insurance industry. Using a prefecture-level data set spanning 30 years, our econometric analysis shows that large fires led to an increase in new policies and policy renewals, consistent with historical narratives that insurance companies used these events to advertise their business. We also show that this subsequent surge in policies led to more small fir…
Elite mobility and continuity during a regime change
How does a regime change influence elite mobility? By collecting data on elites after the Meiji Restoration in Japan in 1868, through which Japan transitioned from a feudal regime to a modern regime, we provide new evidence that the impact of the regime change on elite mobility varies across the stages of the regime change. We analyze the impact of the regime change from two aspects: (1) the composition of elites or elite membership and (2) the i…
Designing wartime economic controls
In 1937, the Japanese government accelerated the expansion of its military expenditure and began to impose controls on the economy to maintain the balance of international payments. The controls were developed through trial and error. The cotton spinning industry was one of the industries most deeply affected by these controls. Initially, the government simply reduced the allocation of foreign exchange for raw cotton imports. However, because thi…
Disentangling the effects of technological and organizational changes during the rise of the factory
This article contributes to the 'factory debate' by disentangling the effects of technological change and organizational change during the rise of the factory, using unique data from the weaving industry in early twentieth-century Japan. During this period, a variety of production organizations co-existed, as did a variety of technologies, which creates an excellent opportunity to evaluate the implications of the factory system. Using regression …
Creative Destruction of Industries
The Great Kanto Earthquake occurred on 1 September 1923 and inflicted serious damage on Yokohama City. About 90 percent of the factories in Yokohama City were burnt down or completely destroyed. However, these manufacturing industries appear to have swiftly recovered in the aftermath of the damage. This article investigates the role of creative destruction due to the Great Kanto Earthquake. Using firm-level data on capital (horsepower of motors) …

The expanding Empire and spatial distribution of economic activity
In 1910, Japan annexed Korea and integrated it into the Empire of Japan. According to its policy of assimilating colonies, the Japanese government intended to remove the tariffs between Japan and Korea, an aim which had almost been realized by 1923. The removal of the tariff barrier was supposed to improve market access between Japan and Korea. This article explores the implications of this event, focusing on the spatial distribution of economic …

Productivity Change and Mine Dynamics
In the 1930s and 1940s, the Japanese coal industry experienced huge fluctuations in production and labor productivity. In this paper, I explore the micro-aspects of labour productivity change in the coal industry during World War II using mine-level data, compiled from official statistics and original documents of the Coal Control Association (Sekitan Toseikai). The coal industry in this period was characterized by dynamic changes in market struc…
Listing Policy and Development of the Tokyo Stock Exchange in the Prewar Period
During the first forty years since the establishment of the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) in 1878 the market was relatively small and the listed firms were concentrated in the areas close to Tokyo. This chapter examines why the TSE stayed relatively stagnant during the first forty years and why it suddenly took off in the late 1910s. It identifies a small change in the TSE's policy toward listing in its stock market in 1918. Before 1918, the firms h…

The Japanese Economic System and Its Historical Origins
Japan's rise from the ashes of defeat in the Second World War to its position now as one of the world's foremost economies has long been recognized as one of the most startling turnarounds of the 20th Century. With economic reform again at the top of the global agenda with the fall of the Soviet bloc and the continuing struggle of the developing nations, the lessons of Japan's success have never been more valuable. This volume looks closely at th…
The Evolution of the Financial System in Post-War Japan
The Japanese financial system is regarded as a key factor behind Japan's remarkable post-war growth. The main bank arrangements, linking companies with a principal source of funds, and complementary institutional networks were complex and intricate, and underpinned industrial investment and expansion. In the 1950s, the city banks, as the main banks of manufacturers, were asked to supply large amounts of funds to their clients, acting as substitut…
The Japanese Firm under the Wartime Planned Economy
This chapter aims to stimulate discussion and research in the future by focusing on institutional changes taking place in a period that has been relatively ignored by researchers. The chapter points out that in the 1920s the Japanese economy was much more like a classical economy: the labour and capital markets were more competitive, industrial relations were more adversarial, and managers acted as agents for capitalists. The great transformation…
