Duration of Static and Dynamic Periods of the Upper Arm During Daily Life of Manual Wheelchair Users and Matched Able-Bodied Participants
Background: Manual wheelchair (MWC) users with spinal cord injuries (SCI) are at a significantly higher risk of experiencing rotator cuff pathology than able-bodied individuals. A deeper understanding of where the arm is used dynamically within the humeral workspace during daily life may help explain why MWC users have higher shoulder pathology rates than able-bodied individuals. The purpose of this study was to report the daily percentage and co…
Orientalism, Occidentalism and the Sociology of Crime
This paper builds upon my experience of teaching criminology at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad, where it emerged over an eight-year period that the issues which were most salient in that context might not be covered at all in western criminology texts, and that the theoretical presumptions of western criminology were as likely to be misleading, or at best to miss the point, as to be helpful. An analysis of these difficulties reveal…
On the Relationship Between Landholding and Fertility
One of the more consistent empirical findings of household survey-based fertility research in developing countries is the positive relationship between landholding and fertility. Despite some differences in interpretation, most analysts regard differentials in fertility by landholding status as reflecting purposive, optimizing reproductive behaviour based on differential demand for children and the psychic, social, and/or economic services they p…

Caldwell's theory of fertility transition, the paper is structured as a critique of his position. Drawing on examples and data from Asia, it is argued that the causal significance of sex stratification for fertility lies in the economic risks it imposes on w…
