A Case Study of Veteran Patient‐Researcher Partnerships in Mental Health Research and Practice
INTRODUCTION: Veteran patient partnerships in research improve patient-centred healthcare outcomes within US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centres. To achieve this, researchers must contextualize perspectives, motivations, and contributions of Veteran patients engaged in research (VPERs) as valued consultants within a complex healthcare environment. Our objective was to investigate best practices for research teams partnering with V…

When Is It Modernism? A Lesson from Indonesian Musik Kontemporer
When is it modernism? This article poses this question to traditionally based Indonesian musik kontemporer , as an occasion to examine a distinctive instance of musical modernism, but most importantly to illuminate issues with the question itself. Taking it literally, I identify when musik kontemporer was most clearly modernist, recognizing that modernism, and its conception of history, itself has a history. Scrutinizing the question's more usual…
Introduction to the Special Issue on Global Musical Modernisms
Global Musical Modernisms – the formulation heralds expansion into new arenas of music research. 1 For while certain pairings of the component terms are familiar enough, the concatenation of all three is novel. In music studies, the most notable trend is the flurry of activity around global music history, with study groups in two societies historically focused on Western musics, and one focused on ethnomusicology. 2 Global music history derives s…
Research‐practice partnerships
PURPOSE: Rural Veterans are more likely than urban Veterans to qualify for community care (Veterans Health Administration [VHA]-paid care delivered outside of VHA) due to wait times ≥30 days and longer travel times for VHA care. For rural Veterans receiving both VHA and community care, suboptimal care coordination between VHA and community providers can result in poor follow-up and care fragmentation. We developed Telehealth-based Coordination of…
A Multi-Method Study of a Chalcolithic Kiln in the Bora Plain (Iraqi Kurdistan)
Pyrotechnology has always been a core topic in the archaeological debate concerning phases of deep cultural transformations, such as the Chalcolithic period in the Near East (c. 6000–3500 BC). However, previous studies on pyrotechnological installations, such as pottery kilns, pertaining to this period, have often been mainly descriptive, with a limited use of archaeometric investigations. This work presents a multi-method investigation of a Chal…
Veterans Affairs and Rural Community Providers’ Perspectives on Interorganizational Care Coordination
OBJECTIVE: To investigate challenges in care coordination between US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) clinics and community providers serving rural veterans. METHODS: We completed qualitative interviews in 2017-2018 with a geographically diverse sample of 57 VA and community staff. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. We used Rapid Qualitative Inquiry (RQI) to guide analyses. RESULTS: Results suggested 5 pivotal domains rel…
Veteran Perspectives on Care Coordination Between Veterans Affairs and Community Providers
OBJECTIVE: To investigate veteran perspectives on challenges in care coordination between US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) clinics and community providers in rural areas. METHODS: We completed qualitative interviews with a geographically diverse sample of 51 veterans who had used both VA and community health care services. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. We used directed content analysis (informed by previous work w…
Provider Perceptions of Virtual Care During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic
BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to a dramatic increase in virtual care (VC) across outpatient specialties, but little is known regarding provider acceptance of VC. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess provider perceptions of the quality, efficiency, and challenges of VC versus in-person care with masks. DESIGN: This was a voluntary survey. PARTICIPANTS: Mental health (MH), primary care, medical…
Applied Rapid Qualitative Analysis to Develop a Contextually Appropriate Intervention and Increase the Likelihood of Uptake
BACKGROUND: Rapid approaches to collecting and analyzing qualitative interview data can accelerate discovery timelines and intervention development while maintaining scientific rigor. We describe the application of these methods to a program designed to improve care coordination between the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) and community providers. METHODS: Care coordination between VHA and community providers can be challenging in rural areas…
Interorganizational Care Coordination of Rural Veterans by Veterans Affairs and Community Care Programs
BACKGROUND: In the unique context of rural Veterans' health care needs, expansion of US Department of Veterans Affairs and Community Care programs under the MISSION Act, and the uncertainties of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), it is critical to understand what may support effective interorganizational care coordination for increased access to high-quality care. OBJECTIVES: We conducted a systematic review to examine the interorganizational c…
Patient and provider predictors of telemental health use prior to and during the Covid-19 pandemic within the Department of Veterans Affairs
The current study examined patient and provider differences in use of phone, video, and in-person mental health (MH) services. Participants included patients who completed ≥ 1 MH appointment within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) from 10/1/17-7/10/20 and providers who completed ≥ 100 VA MH appointments from 10/1/17-7/10/20. Adjusted odds ratios (aORs) are reported of patients and providers: (a) completing ≥1 video MH appointment in the pr…
Iterative Decision‐making for Evaluation of Adaptations (Idea)
BACKGROUND: Evidence-based practices (EBPs) are frequently adapted to maximize outcomes while maintaining fidelity to core EBP elements. Many step-by-step frameworks for adapting EBPs have been developed, but these models may not account for common complexities in the adaptation process. In this paper, we introduce the Iterative Decision-making for Evaluation of Adaptations (IDEA), a tool to guide adaptations that addresses these issues. FRAMEWOR…
An Economic Analysis of the Implementation of Team-based Collaborative Care in Outpatient General Mental Health Clinics
BACKGROUND: Collaborative Chronic Care Models represent an evidence-based way to structure care for chronic conditions, including mental health conditions. Few studies, however, have examined the cost implications of collaborative care for mental health. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to conduct an economic analysis of implementing collaborative care in 9 outpatient general mental health clinics. RESEARCH DESIGN: Analyses were derived from a stepped wedge h…
The FRAME
BACKGROUND: This paper describes the process and results of a refinement of a framework to characterize modifications to interventions. The original version did not fully capture several aspects of modification and adaptation that may be important to document and report. Additionally, the earlier framework did not include a way to differentiate cultural adaptation from adaptations made for other reasons. Reporting additional elements will allow f…
The Collaborative Chronic Care Model for Mental Health Conditions
BACKGROUND: Extensive evidence indicates that Collaborative Chronic Care Models (CCMs) improve outcome in chronic medical conditions and depression treated in primary care. Beginning with an evidence synthesis which indicated that CCMs are also effective for multiple mental health conditions, we describe a multistage process that translated this knowledge into evidence-based health system change in the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). EVID…
Factor structure of the Q-LES-Q short form in an enrolled mental health clinic population
The English version of the Q-LES-Q-SF is a valid, reliable self-report instrument for assessing quality of life. Its factor structure can be best described as one strong psychosocial factor. Differences in underlying factor structure across studies may be due to limitations in using EFA on Likert scales, language, culture, locus of participant recruitment, disease burden, and mode of administration

Development of a framework and coding system for modifications and adaptations of evidence-based interventions
BACKGROUND: Evidence-based interventions are frequently modified or adapted during the implementation process. Changes may be made to protocols to meet the needs of the target population or address differences between the context in which the intervention was originally designed and the one into which it is implemented [Addict Behav 2011, 36(6):630-635]. However, whether modification compromises or enhances the desired benefits of the interventio…
Collaborative Chronic Care Models for Mental Health Conditions
OBJECTIVE: Prior meta-analysis indicates that collaborative chronic care models (CCMs) improve mental and physical health outcomes for individuals with mental disorders. This study aimed to investigate the stability of evidence over time and identify patient and intervention factors associated with CCM effects to facilitate implementation and sustainability of CCMs in clinical practice. METHODS: We reviewed 53 CCM trials that analyzed depression,…
The reliability and validity of discrete and continuous measures of psychopathology
In 2 meta-analyses involving 58 studies and 59,575 participants, we quantitatively summarized the relative reliability and validity of continuous (i.e., dimensional) and discrete (i.e., categorical) measures of psychopathology. Overall, results suggest an expected 15% increase in reliability and 37% increase in validity through adoption of a continuous over discrete measure of psychopathology alone. This increase occurs across all types of sample…
Performance Anxiety
Severe anxiety may impair functioning in diverse endeavors such as public speaking, athletics, test-taking, sexual relations, and artistic performance. We extend previous research on performance anxiety to explore the role of higher-order and primary personality traits and years of training on performance anxiety in musicians, prospectively and over repeated observations. Personality was assessed with the Multidimensional Personality Questionnair…
