Dietary practices in Iron Age Northern and Central Botswana
The tempo of crop adoption in the Kalahari Basin Area remains imperfectly understood, with most inferences drawn from sparse macrobotanical finds and stable isotope baselines rather than direct evidence of plant use at the individual level. A long-standing question — the ‘Kalahari Debate’ — concerns whether forager communities in southern Africa were isolated from, or progressively integrated with, neighbouring food-producing societies. The more …
Reconnecting the dead in Iron Age Britain
Though mortuary practices seem largely archaeologically invisible in Iron Age Britain, the visible dead were subject to diverse treatment. Here, the authors report the results of a multi-strand analysis of two Iron Age skeletons buried in a stone cairn at Loch Borralie, north-west Scotland. Manipulation of one skeleton, including the possible removal of the brain, fashioning of long bones into ‘tools’ and reassembly for burial, suggests complex m…
Exploring Contemporary Pastoral Variability through Stable Isotope Analysis in the Turkana Basin, Kenya
In some1 contexts, the term “pastoralism” still invokes a perception of unchanging specialized dietary reliance on herd animals. This is despite the fact that research from across multiple disciplines has emphasized pastoral economic heterogeneity and its spatial and temporal variability, consistent with shifting contextual factors. While diverse accounts attest to dynamic subsistence strategies, direct dietary assessments of the complex interact…
Worlebury Hillfort, Somerset
Excavations at the Iron Age site of Worlebury hillfort during the mid-late 19th century revealed a large number of human skeletal remains, interpreted as victims of a ‘massacre’. Reanalysis of these remains, combining AMS dating, osteological, aDNA, histotaphonomy, and isotope analysis, has enabled a re-evaluation of this hypothesis. AMS dating lends support to the notion that many of these individuals may have died during a single episode, while…
New rites, local lives
Late Pleistocene to late Holocene palaeoecology and human foraging at Kuumbi Cave, Zanzibar Island
Background Climate change played a major role in shaping regional human-environment interactions in Africa during the late Pleistocene-Holocene, but this topic has not been exhaustively studied, particularly in eastern Africa. While there is growing evidence that the coastal and island settings in this region played a critical role in human evolution, combined archaeological and palaeoenvironmental studies have tended to focus on the arid interio…
