  • Applying GRADE-Cerqual to Interpretive Review Findings

Open Access•Cooper, Natalie Leon et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024

GRADE-CERQual (Confidence in the Evidence from Reviews of Qualitative research) was developed to support the use of evidence from qualitative reviews within policy- and decision-making. To date, the approach has been applied predominantly to aggregative synthesis methodologies and descriptive review findings. GRADE-CERQual guidance recommends the approach be tested on more diverse review methodologies and outputs to support its evolution. This pa…

  • Critical Reflections on Conducting Qualitative Health Research During Covid-19

Open Access•Jennifer Nyawira Githaiga, Carmen Späth et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023•Citada por: 3•Referências: 21

COVID-19 ushered in public health guidelines restricting face-to-face contact and movement, and encouraging social distancing, all of which had implications for conducting field-based research during the pandemic. For qualitative researchers, this meant adapting conventional face-to-face methods and resorting to virtual variations of the same in adherence to stipulated COVID-19 health protocols. Virtual qualitative research introduced new concern…

  • Intervention development of a brief messaging intervention for a randomised controlled trial to improve diabetes treatment adherence in sub-Saharan Africa

Open Access•Natalie Leon, Hazel Namadingo et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

The complexity of public health interventions requires that we give more attention to intervention development work. Our documentation and reflection on the StAR2D intervention development process promotes transparency, replicability, assessment of intervention quality, and comparison with other studies

  • Process evaluation of a brief messaging intervention to improve diabetes treatment adherence in sub-Saharan Africa

Open Access•Natalie Leon, Hazel Namadingo et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

This process evaluation provided context and insight into the factors influencing participants' engagement with the text messaging intervention. The complex context in which patients take their diabetes medication, may explain in part, why brief text messaging may have been insufficient to bring about changes in health outcomes. The scale of need for self-management and health service support, suggests that health system strengthening, and other …

  • Digital messaging to support control for type 2 diabetes (StAR2D)

  • Fostering a healthy public for men and HIV

Open Access•C J Colvin, Myrna Van Pinxteren et al.•ARTICLE•Palgrave Communications•2020

This paper examines the recently formed Movement for Change and Social Justice (MCSJ) in the township of Gugulethu, in Cape Town, South Africa. MCSJ is a health and social justice movement that has an unusual trajectory—guided by the political principles and strategies of South Africa AIDS activism, inspired but also frustrated by the contemporary progressive public health activism, and catalysed by a university research partnership at the Univer…

  • Costs of implementing integrated community case management (iCCM) in six African countries

Open Access•Emmanuelle Daviaud, Donela Besada et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2017

BACKGROUND: Sub-Saharan Africa still reports the highest rates of under-five mortality. Low cost, high impact interventions exist, however poor access remains a challenge. Integrated community case management (iCCM) was introduced to improve access to essential services for children 2-59 months through diagnosis, treatment and referral services by community health workers for malaria, pneumonia and diarrhea. This paper presents the results of an …

  • Reduction in child mortality in Ethiopia

Open Access•Tanya Doherty, Sarah Rohde et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2016

BACKGROUND: To examine changes in under-5 mortality, coverage of child survival interventions and nutritional status of children in Ethiopia between 2000 and 2011. Using the Lives Saved Tool, the impact of changes in coverage of child survival interventions on under-5 lives saved was estimated. METHODS: Estimates of child mortality were generated using three Ethiopia Demographic and Health Surveys undertaken between 2000 and 2011. Coverage indica…

  • Self-management of medical abortion

    Megan Wainwright, C J Colvin et al.•ARTICLE•Reproductive Health Matters•2016•Citada por: 6•Referências: 37

Medical abortion is a method of pregnancy termination that by its nature enables more active involvement of women in the process of managing, and sometimes even administering the medications for, their abortions. This qualitative evidence synthesis reviewed the global evidence on experiences with, preferences for, and concerns about greater self-management of medical abortion with lesser health professional involvement. We focused on qualitative …

  • The role of ‘hidden’ community volunteers in community-based health service delivery platforms

Open Access•Natalie Leon, David Sanders et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2015

Community-based research on child survival in sub-Saharan Africa has focussed on the increased provision of curative health services by a formalised cadre of lay community health workers (CHWs), but we have identified a particular configuration, that deserves closer scrutiny. We identified a two-tiered CHW system, with the first tier being the lessor known or 'hidden' community/village level volunteers and the second tier being formal, paid CHWs,…

  • Availability and acceptability of HIV counselling and testing services. A qualitative study comparing clients’ experiences of accessing HIV testing at public sector primary health care facilities or n…

Open Access•Sue-Ann Meehan, Natalie Leon et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

Realised access to HCT is dependent on availability and acceptability of HCT services. Those who utilised either a NGO mobile service or a public PHC facility perceived both service types as available and acceptable. Mobile NGO services provided an accessible opportunity for those who would otherwise not have tested at that time. Policy makers should consider the perceptions and experiences of those accessing HCT services when increasing access t…
