The evolving picture of Sars-CoV-2 and Covid-19 in children
Background The closed-loop stimulation (CLS) pacemaker algorithm is a system that permanently monitors the contractile state of the myocardium and converts the intrinsic information into rate regulation. The role that the CLS algorithm plays in the prevention of syncope recurrences still remains unclear. The aim of our prospective, randomised, single-blind, crossover study was to evaluate the effect of dual-chamber CLS in the prevention of syncop…
Advancing global health and strengthening the HIV response in the era of the Sustainable Development Goals
Epidemiology of HIV and Aids Among Adolescents
OBJECTIVES: To examine levels and patterns of HIV prevalence, knowledge, sexual behavior, and coverage of selected HIV services among adolescents aged 10-19 years and highlight data gaps and challenges. METHODS: Data were reviewed from Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS HIV estimates, nationally representative household surveys, behavioral surveillance surveys, and published literature. RESULTS: A number of gaps exist for adolescent-speci…
Informing policy and programme decisions for scaling up the PMTCT and paediatric HIV response through joint technical missions
In 2005, due to slow global progress in the scale-up of prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) and paediatric HIV programmes, the Inter-agency Task Team (IATT) on the Prevention of HIV infection among Pregnant Women, Mothers, and their Children initiated joint technical missions (JTMs) to countries of high HIV disease burden. The JTMs were intended to galvanize country actions for a more comprehensive response to PMTCT and paediatric …
Implementing services for Early Infant Diagnosis (EID) of HIV
While EID testing has expanded dramatically, a large proportion of PCR- positive infants are initiated on treatment. As EID services continue to scale-up, more programmatic attention and support is needed to retain HIV-exposed infants in care and ensure that those testing positive initiate treatment in a timely manner. Namibia's experience demonstrates that it is feasible for a rural, low-income country to achieve high national coverage of infant…
Who is the vulnerable child? Using survey data to identify children at risk in the era of HIV and Aids
Over the past decade, there has been increasing global attention to mitigating the impacts of the HIV/AIDS epidemic on children's lives. Within this context, developing and tracking global child vulnerability indicators in relation to HIV and AIDS has been critical in terms of assessing need and monitoring progress. Although orphanhood and adult household illness (co-residence with a chronically ill or HIV-positive adult) are frequently used as m…
Global Progress in PMTCT and Paediatric HIV Care and Treatment in Low-and Middle-Income Countries in 2004-2005
A growing number of countries are moving to scale up interventions for prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV in maternal and child health services. Similarly, many are working to improve access to paediatric HIV treatment. This paper reviews national programme data for 2004–2005 from low-and middle-income countries to track progress in these programmes. The attainment of the UNGASS target of reducing HIV infections by 50% by 2…
Strategies for prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV
Over 90 per cent of paediatric HIV infections are maternally acquired, most of these in sub-Saharan Africa. Mortality trends underscore the humanitarian and ethical obligation for urgent global action to protect children from HIV. With the adoption of anti-retroviral therapy in pregnancy, mother-to-child transmission rates have declined to 4-6 per cent in the USA and other industrialised countries. In low-resource settings, where most of the chil…
