Using Census Data in the Classroom to Increase Quantitative Literacy and Promote Critical Sociological Thinking
One useful, but underutilized, strategy to increase quantitative literacy and promote critical sociological thinking is to have students investigate demographic trends in their local community. In this article, the authors describe a project in which students compare and contrast the demographic characteristics of two counties in their state using the 2000 Census Bureau data, formulate specific research questions using the data they have collecte…
Partnering for Care in HIV Prevention Trials
QUALITATIVE CASE STUDIES WERE conducted at seven international sites conducting HIV prevention research in Africa, Asia, and the Americas to identify strategies for ensuring that health needs of research participants identified in the course of research are adequately addressed. Key factors were identified that contribute to the balance between direct care and healthcare referrals at a research site, as well as the overall quality of the healthca…
Societal images of youth
In this paper, the authors explore representations and interpretations of images of youth that surfaced in discussions with groups of adolescents in four community youth organizations. As part of a larger multi‐method study, adolescents created photo‐essays on the theme ‘Youth Making a Difference in the Community.’ These projects then served as triggers for small‐group discussions around the product and meaning of the exercise. In the analysis of…
Toward a Critical Social Theory of Youth Empowerment
This article contributes to the development of a critical social theory of youth empowerment which emphasizes collective efforts to create sociopolitical change. It draws upon analysis of four youth empowerment models, and upon findings from a participatory research study which identified key dimensions of critical youth empowerment: (1) a welcoming, safe environment, (2) meaningful participation and engagement, (3) equitable power-sharing betwee…
A Qualitative Study of Condom Use among Married Couples in Kampala, Uganda
Twenty-five years into the HIV/AIDS epidemic, condom use among married/stable couples remains low and under-researched in developing countries, even countries with high HIV prevalence. Introducing condoms into a long-standing relationship, in spite of HIV risk, is likely to be awkward. We conducted a qualitative study in Kampala, Uganda, with 39 couples reporting 100% condom use in the previous three months. The women were recruited from among wo…
Adult Roles in Community-Based Youth Empowerment Programs
Current literature on community-based youth empowerment programs provides few specific operational descriptions of adult roles. This research addressed that gap by exploring the perspectives and experiences of adults actively engaged with youth empowerment programs. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews, field observations, and interactive group discussions with adult program leaders. The following dimensions of adults' work were identif…
Expanding the Concept of Women's Work
This qualitative study explored the community volunteer experiences of women living in the context of poverty. A feminist narrative perspective informed the interpretation of the data. The narrative themes identified and discussed were: volunteer work in the context of poverty; the invisible work of discovery and figuring things out; and the community work of mobilizing, organizing, and connecting with others. The findings demonstrate the positiv…
