  • Global surveillance of trends in cancer survival 2000–14 (Concord-3)

Open Access•Claudia Allemani, Tomohiro Matsuda et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2018

BACKGROUND: In 2015, the second cycle of the CONCORD programme established global surveillance of cancer survival as a metric of the effectiveness of health systems and to inform global policy on cancer control. CONCORD-3 updates the worldwide surveillance of cancer survival to 2014. • Stocks and flows of natural and human-derived capital in ecosystem services

    Open Access•Laurence Jones, Lisa Norton et al.•ARTICLE•Land Use Policy•2016•Citada por: 9•Referências: 44

There is growing interest in the role that natural capital plays in underpinning ecosystem services. Yet, there remain differences and inconsistencies in the conceptualisation of capital and ecosystem services and the role that humans play in their delivery. Using worked examples in a stocks and flows systems approach, we show that both natural capital (NC) and human-derived (produced, human, social, cultural, financial) capital (HDC) are necessa…

  • Ohr und Auge -- Klang und Form

    C Morris, Carl N Morris•ARTICLE•Music and Letters•2009

Herder is probably most familiar to musicologists as one of the formative figures in the musical nationalism of nineteenth-century Europe. His work on the national characteristics of the Volkslied is typically credited with initiating the discourse on national musical style and its roots in ‘folk’ tradition. In Ohr und Auge — Klang und Form (Ear and Eye—Sound and Form) Arne Stollberg outlines a less familiar perspective, one that detects Herder's…

  • The Gesta Tancredi of Ralph of Caen

    C Morris•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2006

The progress of recent research into early crusading history has focused to a significant extent on the Norman participation and on the principality of Antioch. A key piece of evidence is the work of Ralph of Caen, whose history covers the years to 1106, when it suddenly stops. With a bias in favour of Bohemond and Tancred, he reported on many of the critical events of those years, among them the tensions with the Emperor Alexius, the quarrels of…

  • Eastward Bound

    C Morris•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2006

Interest in pilgrimage and crusade has increased greatly in recent years, and more particularly with reference to the later middle ages. Scholars such as Norman Housley and Christopher Tyerman have demonstrated how crusading endeavours persisted long beyond the thirteenth century, and how they helped to shape the modern world. Eastward Bound is a collaboration between scholars working in Britain and the United States, and is directed to the inter…

Beginning in 1960 with the landmark decision Arizona v. Attakai, a consistent set of state court decisions have supported the church's claim that the use of peyote is a reasonable and legitimate aspect of religion within the church. • On the Limits of Symbolic Interpretation in Anthropology [and Comments and Reply]

    I C Jarvie, Myron J Aronoff et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1976•Citada por: 5

Symbolic readings of ritual acts rely on a distinction between the symbolic and the instrumental that is hard to sustain. In order that we take public lectures and academic papers-which are certainly ritual acts-intellectually seriously, it is enough that they not be obviously false. A further argument against reading them symbolically is that the symbolic reading involves projection of hidden meanings which have not been intentionally put there.…

It has shaped most subsequent discussions of Peter’s career, and it must be said at once that no completely new material has come to light since then. There is, however, a problem of perpetual interest posed by the divergences among twelfth-century accounts of the origins of the First Crusade. Until the advent of modern historiography, it was accepted t…

    C Morris, C Patrick Morris•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological Research•1976

Three episodes from a Western Yavapai variant of the Athabascan story of Monster Slayer are analyzed to illustrate the importance of "implicit" metaphors in the structuring of key symbols in narratives. Bears, juniper trees, and deer were found to be organized into implicit metaphors reflecting fundamental contrasts that are an inherent part of Western Yavapai domestic life. Such metaphors make personally accessible to the listener the inherent a…
