Does the Japan Science and Technology Agency Index of Competence ( JST ‐ IC ) Predict Mortality? Findings From the Sonic Study
A higher Japan Science and Technology Agency Index of Competence (JST-IC) score-an index of higher-level functional ability among older Japanese adults-was associated with a lower long-term risk of all-cause mortality, with significant associations observed across all age groups and among those in their 80s, but not among those in their 70s.
Longitudinal Association Between the Carotid Intima‐Media Thickness and Sarcopenia in an Older Japanese Population
Everyday Social Interactions and Affect in Very Old Adults
The beneficial role of social relationships in the well‐being of older adults has been well documented. However, little is known about how social interactions contribute to well‐being in very old adults aged 80 years and above. This study examined between‐ and within‐person associations between social interactions and affect in very old adults' daily lives. Fifty‐seven community dwellers (age 82 to 86 years) responded to a daily diary questionnai…
Obligations in Japan
Obligations embody a sense of responsibility toward others. Middle‐aged adults may particularly feel obligated to many close others, from their parents to children, for instance. Previous studies suggest mixed findings on whether obligations benefit well‐being and relationships. Accounting for the cultural context and different types of obligations can help explain the mixed findings. We examined obligations in 371 middle‐aged adults living in Ja…
The Function of Leisure Activity Measure (FLAM)
Let us move forward
Generational labels (e.g., Millennials and Baby Boomers) are widely used in daily life to represent the unique characteristics of groups of people. However, the existence of generational differences remains contentious. In their focal paper, Costanza et al. (2023) critically reviewed the literature on generational differences and proposed two future research directions: the social constructionist and lifespan development perspectives. In this com…
Cohort Differences in Aging Self-Perceptions Among Japanese Older Adults
Various individual resources for successful aging have improved during the last decades. However, a limited number of studies have examined historical changes in how older individuals view their own aging. This study examined cohort differences in aging self-perceptions among Japanese older adults. Using nationally representative data obtained 9 years apart in 1987 and 1996, we compared two cohorts born in the 1920s versus the 1930s. To control f…
Early- to late-life environmental factors and late-life global cognition in septuagenarian and octogenarians
This study aimed to evaluate cognitively stimulating environments throughout life and to examine direct and indirect associations between these environments and late-life cognition. Early-life education, three domains of work complexity (data, people, and things) based on the longest-held occupation, and engagement in late-life leisure activities (LAs) were assessed. A structural equation model was developed using cross-sectional data of 1721 Jap…
Construct Validity of a New Health Assessment Questionnaire for the National Screening Program of Older Adults in Japan
The Japanese government has implemented a new screening program to promote measures to avoid worsening lifestyle-related diseases and frailty among the older population. In this effort, the government formulated a new health assessment questionnaire for the screening program of old-old adults aged ≥75 years. The questionnaire comprises 15 items, of which 12 address frailty, two address general health status, and one addresses smoking habits. This…
Does positive affect predict mortality and morbidity? A 19-year longitudinal study of middle-aged and older Japanese adults
Positive affect contributes to health and longevity. While most research has been conducted in individualistic societies where the experience and expression of positive emotions are highly valued, evidence remains scarce in collectivistic societies that de-emphasize the importance thereof. Employing 19-year longitudinal data of Japanese adults (age range 40–79; N = 2,033), we examined whether positive affect predicted mortality and morbidity. Hea…
The role of social resources and trajectories of functional health following stroke
Stability and change in well-being among middle-aged and older Japanese
Prior evidence suggests that subjective well-being (SWB) remains relatively stable across adulthood. However, longitudinal evidence is sparse except in Western societies such as North America and Western Europe. We examined age-related changes in SWB (life satisfaction, positive affect, and negative affect) among middle-aged and older Japanese. We applied multilevel growth models to 14-year seven-wave longitudinal data of a dynamic cohort study. …
Successful Aging in East Asia
This study observed heterogeneity in successful aging in East Asia. To identify policy implications, future research should explore potential societal factors influencing individuals' opportunities for successful aging
Extreme flood events and their frequency variations during the middle to late-Holocene recorded in the sediment of Lake Suigetsu, central Japan
Many studies are reconstructing flood records in the continental margins during the middle to late-Holocene. However, distinguishing the frequency and magnitude of flood events was difficult. Light gray event layers (GELs) in the sediment of Lake Suigetsu in Central Japan can solve this problem because they are recording the occurrence and magnitude of flood events during the last 80 years. Using these GELs, we aimed to reconstruct the frequency …
Reanalysis of the Atmospheric Radiocarbon Calibration Record from Lake Suigetsu, Japan
Terrestrial plant macrofossils from the sedimentary record of Lake Suigetsu, Japan, provide the only quasi-continuous direct atmospheric record of radiocarbon ( 14 C) covering the last 50 ka cal BP (Bronk Ramsey et al. 2012). Since then, new high precision data have become available on U-Th dated speleothems from Hulu Cave China, covering the same time range (Cheng et al. 2018). In addition, an updated varve-based chronology has also been publish…
Social Integration and Terminal Decline in Life Satisfaction Among Older Japanese
This study suggests that social integration plays a protective role in late-life well-being and that sustaining an active social life and supportive social interactions may help mitigate terminal decline in well-being

Age, Emotion Regulation, and Affect in Adulthood
Evidence indicates that older adults experience high levels of emotional well‐being. However, little is known empirically about the underlying mechanism of this state. The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether emotion regulation mediates the link between age and affect in adulthood. The sample consisted of 516 J apanese participants aged 30 (±1), 50 (±1), and 70 (±1) years, who were registered with an I nternet survey company. C…
Black ceramic spheres as marker grains for microfossil analyses, with improved chemical, physical, and optical properties
Marker grain method is commonly used by palynologists to quantify absolute pollen concentration in sediments. DuPont NEM plastic microbeads and Lycopodium spore tablets are two of the most commonly used marker grains. The DuPont NEM series has an obvious advantage over Lycopodium tablets because Lycopodium is not guaranteed ‘exotic’ in many ecosystems (especially in the past). Moreover, NEM also has high visibility, easily identifiable spherical …

Integration of the Old and New Lake Suigetsu (Japan) Terrestrial Radiocarbon Calibration Data Sets
The varved sediment profile of Lake Suigetsu, central Japan, offers an ideal opportunity from which to derive a terrestrial record of atmospheric radiocarbon across the entire range of the 14 C dating method. Previous work by Kitagawa and van der Plicht (1998a,b, 2000) provided such a data set; however, problems with the varve-based age scale of their SG93 sediment core precluded the use of this data set for 14 C calibration purposes. Lake Suiget…

Developments in the Calibration and Modeling of Radiocarbon Dates
Calibration is a core element of radiocarbon dating and is undergoing rapid development on a number of different fronts. This is most obvious in the area of 14 C archives suitable for calibration purposes, which are now demonstrating much greater coherence over the earlier age range of the technique. Of particular significance to this end is the development of purely terrestrial archives such as those from the Lake Suigetsu sedimentary profile an…

New 14 C Determinations from Lake Suigetsu, Japan
Calibration is a fundamental stage of the radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating process if one is to derive meaningful calendar ages from samples' 14 C measurements. For the first time, the IntCal09 calibration curve (Reimer et al. 2009) provided an internationally ratified calibration data set across almost the complete range (0 to 50,000 cal BP) of the 14 C timescale. However, only the last 12,550 cal yr of this record are composed of terrestrial data, le…

A total of 237 surface soil pollen samples were collected from less disturbed zonal communities, and a new surface pollen data set has been established in northern China. Pollen—climate parameter transfer functions using weighted-averaging regression and calibration partial least squares (WA-PLS) model as a tool to reconstruct past climate changes from pollen data, were tested with this new surface pollen data set. The results of cross-validation…
The Construction Process of the Angkor Monuments Elucidated by the Magnetic Susceptibility of Sandstone
The Angkor monuments in Cambodia are mainly constructed of grey to yellowish‐brown sandstones. No differences in the constituent minerals and in the chemical composition of the sandstones have been confirmed among the monuments. However, we have found their magnetic susceptibility a useful parameter by which to distinguish them. The principal monuments of Angkor Wat, Ta Prohm, Preah Khan, Banteay Kdei and Bayon, constructed from the Angkor Wat pe…

Formal definition and dating of the GSSP (Global Stratotype Section and Point) for the base of the Holocene using the Greenland NGRIP ice core, and selected auxiliary records
The Greenland ice core from NorthGRIP (NGRIP) contains a proxy climate record across the Pleistocene–Holocene boundary of unprecedented clarity and resolution. Analysis of an array of physical and chemical parameters within the ice enables the base of the Holocene, as reflected in the first signs of climatic warming at the end of the Younger Dryas/Greenland Stadial 1 cold phase, to be located with a high degree of precision. This climatic event i…
