  • Governing Interdependence

    Open Access•Miguel Fuentes, Diego Lawler•ARTICLE•Global Policy•2026

Contemporary science and technology diplomacy often operates through leader‐centric, event‐driven, and weakly institutionalized arrangements, which are ill‐suited to domains marked by high interdependence, nonlinearity, and rapidly evolving knowledge. This article proposes Complex Adaptive Science and Technology Diplomacy (CASTD) not as a descriptive label for the field as a whole, but as a conditional analytical and institutional design framewor…

  • Artifacts as Living Entities

Diego Lawler, Jesús Vega-Encabo•ARTICLE•Techné Research in Philosophy and…•2025

This paper explores how maintenance and repair practices provide insights into the nature of artifacts. Inspired by Michael Thompson’s (2008) analysis of life-forms, we propose an analogy that invites us to view artifacts as if they were akin to living beings. This analogy allows us to argue that artifacts possess a kind of “life-form”: a structured mode of existence characterized by their intrinsic organization, characteristic operations, and di…

  • Toward an Enactive Conception of Productive Practices

    Open Access•Ezequiel A Di Paolo, Diego Lawler et al.•ARTICLE•Philosophy & Technology•2023

We examine the question of material agency as raised in material engagement theory (MET). Insofar as MET tends to highlight the causal roles played by extra-bodily material flows in human practices, the term “material agency” does not sufficiently distinguish cases in which these flows are part of an agentive engagement from cases in which they are not. We propose an operational criterion to effect such a distinction. We claim this criterion is o…

  • Presidential diplomacy meets science diplomacy

    Open Access•Diego Lawler, Miguel Fuentes•ARTICLE•Global Policy•2022

In this article, we analyze science diplomacy, for the first time, as a new type of political tool that can influence and nurture the functioning of presidential diplomacy. We conduct this analysis in the context of the global crisis produced by COVID‐19, considering the struggle to obtain both vaccines and the technology to develop them. We discuss the Russian‐Argentine relationship during the pandemic emergency in the Southern Cone. This case p…

  • The centrality of the machine in the thought of Jacques Lafitte

Open Access•Darío Rubén Sandrone, Darío Sandrone et al.•ARTICLE•Philosophy & Technology•2022

Jacques Lafitte occupies an odd place in the philosophy of technology. He was a French engineer who made a significant and conceptually innovative contribution to this field, yet his influence has been elusive and largely ignored until relatively recently. Many of Lafitte’s ideas find echoes in the work of later philosophers (particularly Gilbert Simondon), yet, notably in the case of Simondon, apparently without any direct line of influence. Laf…

  • Natural Born Transhumans

Open Access•Karina Silvia Pedace, Karina Pedace et al.•ARTICLE•Revista de Filosofia Aurora•2020

This work promotes the thesis that humans are naturally transhuman. In order to achieve this, we present in the first two sections some examples of technological devices assembled to human beings, and we critically review the assumptions and dichotomies on which the idea of human enhancement is based according to the ordinary transhumanist vision. Thirdly, we present the thesis of the Extended Mind to support our intuition. Fourthly, we dismantle…

    Open Access•Diego Lawler•ARTICLE•Scientiae Studia•2006
