An Emblematic Case in the Kingdom of Iraq
This article illustrates aspects of modern Iraqi history, being concerned with the life and career of Yamen Yousef (Yāmēn Yūsif, Hebrew name: Yāmīn Ṣiyyōn [ben] Yōsēf [ben] Nissīm), an officer in the army of the Kingdom of Iraq, who was the commander in charge of the Baghdad Royal Arsenal in the 1930s, and earlier on had been one of the three young officers made to proclaim Iraq’s first king during the coronation ceremony. That up to the late 193…
Digital technologies and artificial intelligence’s present and foreseeable impact on lawyering, judging, policing and law enforcement
Courtyards, Balconies and Roofs
During the 1920s and early 1930s, Jews were conspicuous in Iraqi civic life and initially played a prominent role in building the new state, including the further development of the commercial, postal and judicial system, thus entering the state bourgeoisie of civil servants that was being formed in those early years. This study will focus on the interplay of tradition (and Jewish orthopraxy) with Jewish modernities: the latter are reflected both…

Aspects of Italy's Jewish experience, as shaped by local and global factors
This article discusses a number of trends in the evolution of Italy's attitudes towards Jewish concerns since the 1980s. In this overview, such factors that can be better understood within broader trends known from elsewhere are privileged. The prevalent denial of Italy's sharing in the bleaker side of Europe's legacy has now been reduced: because of less parochial attitudes on the part of gentile culture; because of the passing away of the gener…

The rod and the crocodile. Temporal relations in textual hermeneutics
We use a graphic formalism to make explicit differences in the interpretation of temporal relations in natural-language text. Out of the panoply of computational representation methods for time or tense, we select Petri nets, and discuss why. We illustrate their potential for semantics and for sign theorists, by analyzing how some late antique and medieval exegeses understood the narrative of Moses and Pharaoh's magicians, and the former's rod sw…

Captive Gazelles in Iraqi Jewry in Modern Times in Relation to Cultural Practices and Vernacular Housing
As late as in the first half of the twentieth century, there were some Jews in Iraq who kept gazelles for meat, even in urban homes. This was made possible by the features of vernacular housing this article explains. Far more prominent, however, was the use made in Iraq of gazelle hides in the manufacturing of Torah scrolls, which were ubiquitous in Iraq, and many were exported from there at various times. The prevailing custom of dedicating Tora…
Computational models of the emotions
Have computation, animatronics, and robotic art anything to say about emotion, compassion, and how to model them? The survivor project
We discuss robotic art, emotion in robotic art, and compassion in the philosophy of art. We discuss a particular animated artwork, survivor , the walking chair, symbolising survivors of landmine blasts, learning to use crutches, and maimed emotionally as well as physically. Its control incorporates mutual relations between very rudimentary representations of distinct emotions. This artwork is intended for sensitising viewers to the horror experie…
