Statement on the Importance of Sexuality and Gender Research
Queering Desire
There’s an assumption, in the online spaces frequented by young lesbians, that lesbian history is clear-cut. Once upon a time, the story goes, lesbians would meet in bars and dance, drink, and fall in love. Butches and femmes always knew how to dress, fluently speaking the language of lesbian sartorial communication. This is a fantasy, the bare bones of history polished into a shine by a desire to belong. There is a hunger, among a new generation…
Consent
This chapter interrogates the phenomenon of the sex game gone wrong to examine how it is figured in the court room. By analysing court transcripts of 3 recent criminal cases in which a woman has died as a result of a so-called sex game gone wrong, the chapter explores the role of consent, and how it is evidenced in the court room. Even though consent to sexual violence which is more than transient or trifling is impossible in law, as confirmed by…

Holding hands
Many LGBTQ individuals grow up with a sense of being ‘other’ in a heteronormative society. This is not just an internal psychological experience, as many LGBTQ individuals report being recipients of hostility, victimisation and harassment. Interpersonally, homophobia and transphobia (both actual and fear of) may play out between partners and inhibit partners from commonplace displays of affection (e.g. holding hands in public). Holding hands in p…

Secrecy and Silence in the Research Process
Feminist research is informed by a history of breaking silences, of demanding that women's voices be heard, recorded and included in wider intellectual genealogies and histories. This has led to an emphasis on voice and speaking out in the research endeavour. Moments of secrecy and silence are less often addressed. This gives rise to a number of questions. What are the silences, secrets, omissions and and political consequences of such moments? W…

Lesbian Motherhood
This book studies the growing number of lesbian women embarking on parenthood after coming out. Theoretical debates about lesbian motherhood often consider its assimilative or transgressive dimensions
Queering Representation
This article explores some of the ethical and epistemological dilemmas that arose from a cross-national research project on lesbian motherhood in two European countries, Sweden and Ireland. The differing contexts for sexual citizenship presented particular challenges in relation to negotiating wider norms regarding visibility. Lesbian mothers in Sweden presented a discourse of openness that strongly advocated visibility and the importance of soci…

And Introduction
Contested Heteronormativities
This article explores discourses of fatherhood among lesbian parents in Sweden and Ireland, based on interviews with 68 participants. Swedish lesbian parents generally expressed a strong preference for a known donor who would play an active parenting role. In contrast, Irish participants usually chose an uninvolved donor, but nonetheless one whose identity was known, albeit usually only to the lesbian parents. The significance of biology to kinsh…
