  • Timor-Leste's Long Road to Independence

Open Access•Pedro Aires Oliveira, Brad Simpson et al.•BOOK•Timor-Leste's Long Road to…•2023

From a much neglected Portuguese colony to independence, Timor-Leste travelled a belated, long and troubled journey that included a 24-year Indonesian occupation. A classic process of European decolonization (1974-1975) was followed by a nationalist struggle against 'Third World Colonialism' (1975-1999), and a final phase under the direct aegis of the United Nations (1999-2002). More than a direct relation between coloniser and colonised, this tu…

The Genesis of a Policy: Defining and Defending Australia’s National Interest in the Asia-Pacific, 1921–57." Australian Historical Studies, 53(2), pp. 364–365

  • Australia’s Policy Successes in Timor-Leste

    Open Access•Clinton Fernandes•ARTICLE•Estudios de Asia y África•2022•Referências: 1

An independent Timor-Leste posed a dilemma for Australian foreign policy. On the one hand, Australia led the multinational military coalition that restored peace in 1999, and had an obvious interest in ensuring that its newest neighbour was self-reliant and stable. On the other hand, independence negated three decades of Australian diplomatic effort to control the oil and gas resources of the Timor Sea. Accordingly, Australia accepted Timor-Leste…

  • Indonesia's war against East Timor

    Clinton Fernandes•ARTICLE•Small Wars and Insurgencies•2021•Citada por: 1•Referências: 3

Indonesia invaded East Timor in 1975 and occupied it for the next 24 years with the military and diplomatic support of major powers. Despite its insistence that its annexation was irreversible, Indonesia was forced to withdraw in 1999, resulting in an independent East Timor. This article explains how the 24-year war against East Timor ended by analysing the three pillars on which Indonesia’s control rested: its military superiority over the East …

  • Smart IoT Devices in the Home

Open Access•Vijay Sivaraman, Hassan Habibi Gharakheili et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Technology and Society…•2018

Internet of Things (IoT) devices possess network capabilities and contain at least a part of the application logic, i.e., they have the ability to perform Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) communications on their own, and can process some of the sensor data. The IoT thus refers to the network of physical objects embedded with electronics, software, sensors and connectivity to enable objects to exchange data with the manufac…

  • Accomplice to Mass Atrocities

    Open Access•Clinton Fernandes•ARTICLE•Politics and Governance•2015•Citada por: 1•Referências: 1

This paper examines early warning of, and political responses to, mass atrocities in East Timor in the late 1970s. Using newly-declassified intelligence and diplomatic records, it describes Indonesia’s invasion of East Timor in 1975 and its three year military campaign to crush the East Timorese resistance. It shows that the campaign resulted in mass deaths due to famine and disease, and considers the United Nations’ response to the unfolding cri…
