  • Vulnerability and Disclosure in Science

    Open Access•Albert I Goldberg•ARTICLE•Science Communication•1997•Referências: 29

The interplay between agency and structure explains a scientist's readiness to disclose information about research efforts. In a survey of 628 Israeli researchers, personal strategies in the pursuit of collegial appreciation were influenced by conflicting value guidelines at different time-space frameworks for scientific work. When researchers encountered the value of communality, they were encouraged to communicate freely to obtain community rec…

  • Fundamental Reorganization in Scientific Administration

    Open Access•Luydmilla Oigenblick, Albert I Goldberg et al.•ARTICLE•Science Communication•1996•Referências: 11

The system of science in the former Soviet Union was based on a command administration that centralized decision making at government ministries. In 1987, the government introduced the new system of khozraschet, or accountability, granting a greater degree of administrative freedom to research institutes but obligating them to take responsibility for financing their activities. In a 1991 survey, scientists at three Moscow research and development…

    Open Access•Albert I Goldberg, Ezey M Dar‐El et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Organizational Behavior•1991•Citada por: 2•Referências: 6

Reacting to a perception of threat, workers can become fatalistic or increase their readiness to participate in plant safety programs. A field study of 396 production workers at eight factories tested key relationships derivable from this assumption. Workers were found to be particularly sensitive to presumed personal jeopardy from existing safety hazards. These threat perceptions were tied to previous encounters with accidents and to training fo…

  • External Effects on Research Endeavors

    Open Access•Yehouda Shenhav, Yehouda A Shenhav et al.•ARTICLE•Human Relations•1989•Referências: 28

A resource dependence perspective is used to conceptualize and to investigate the consequences of externalfunding on scientific enterprise. We argue that the participation of scientists in collegial activities is constrained by resource relations and the resulting dependence of scientists on nonscientists. Constraining factors include secrecy regulations, nonscientists' lack of concern for scientific standards, and the diminished research time av…

  • Normative and Utilitarian Particularism

    Open Access•Albert I Goldberg, Chanoch Jacobsen•ARTICLE•Human Relations•1987•Referências: 46

Particularistic considerations among professionals have been ascribed to social structural exigencies. A comparison of conventionally employed professionals with practitioners belonging to a communal framework (kibbutz) reveals two distinct forms of particularism: a generally approved Normative Particularism that caters to the legitimate demands of the professional's immediate social environment, and a less accepted Utilitarian Particularism that…

  • Migration and Research Commitments

    Open Access•Albert I Goldberg, Rachel Kats•ARTICLE•International Migration•1984•Citada por: 6•Referências: 7

This study examines the influence of migration on the long-term commitments by foreign trained researchers at Israel's 6 universities. Israel's scientists are trained in the US, Western Europe, and Eastern Europe, and even though these centers have different research traditions, scientific endeavor may provide a common method and outlook. The author hypothesizes relationships between different training backgrounds and long-term research commitmen…

  • Organizational Behavior, Career Orientations, and the Propensity to Move among Professionals

Open Access•Alan Kirschenbaum, Alan B Kirschenbaum et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Work and Occupations•1976

Organizational environment and career motivations are examined in order to understand a professional's propensity to move. Four major groups of variabieU are examined: situational, professional-bureaucratic, occupational values, and career cycle/mobility orientations. The results of a step-wise regression suggest two major orientations associated with the propensity to move: the "career mobile cosmopolitan "and the "career mobile local. "A noted …

  • The Relevance of Cosmopolitan/Local Orientations to Professional Values and Behavior

    Open Access•Albert I Goldberg•ARTICLE•Sociology of Work and Occupations•1976•Citada por: 10•Referências: 13

Two key concepts used by social scientists are cosmopolitanism and localism. Cosmopolitanism, however, has come to be confused with professionalism This confusion can be eliminated by returning the concepts to their original usage to designate outer and inner reference groups. This more restricted definition of cosmopolitanism-localism was used to test the proposition that an orientation combining both cosmopolitan and local characteristics, call…
