  • The Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces and Society 70 Years Later

    Open Access•David Mccone, Wilbur J Scott et al.•ARTICLE•Armed Forces & Society•2025•Citada por: 2•Referências: 27

This article provides an account of the founding, growth, and success of the Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces & Society (IUS), a long-established professional organization for those studying the military and war. How IUS has thrived invites explanation. Two theoretical themes guide our effort: first, the life cycles of organizations literature, and two, a complementary focus on the professional-career life cycles of IUS's participants. To…

  • Military Sociology

    Wilbur J Scott, David R Segal et al.•BOOK•Military Sociology•2022

This textbook introduces the reader to the field of military sociology through narrative reviews of selected key studies in the discipline. The book provides a guided introduction. In each chapter, the authors set the stage and then immerse the reader in Spotlights – that is, descriptions of essential studies that inform the discipline of military sociology. The goal is to afford readers a ready pathway into how sociologists and social scientists…

The U.S. military is designed to take on a similarly constructed foreign military located across some line of demarcation. The goal of such conventional warfare is to incapacitate or annihilate the enemy military, whereupon victory is achieved – a task for which the U.S. military has no peer on the current world scene or the foreseeable future. However, the U.S.'s adversaries since the end of the Cold War have not been conventional forces, as evi…

    Open Access•Wilbur J Scott, David R Mccone et al.•ARTICLE•Armed Forces & Society•2009•Citada por: 5•Referências: 6

William Lind has argued that the U.S. military is improperly configured and trained to fight 'fourth-generation' wars, that is, ones in which one of the participants is a nonstate actor and where the strategy, tactics, and battlefield are unconventional. This position has slowly gained acceptance among U.S. Army and Marine commanders, who have struggled to adapt to fourth-generation realities on the ground in Iraq. Drawing on oral-history and foc…

    Wilbur J Scott, Wilbur Scott et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Focus•2006•Citada por: 3•Referências: 4

U.S. soldiers deploying to Iraq in 2003 were told that the war was necessary to rid Saddam Hussein of weapons of mass destruction and had expected to fight a near-peer enemy using conventional tactics. Instead, they encountered a very different battlefield and, to date, no weapons of mass destruction have been found. This paper focuses on this apparent violation of soldiers' expectations. We analyze oral histories collected from two units of Ft. …

  • PTSD and Agent Orange

    Open Access•Wilbur J Scott•ARTICLE•Armed Forces & Society•1992•Citada por: 8

Two major controversies have marked the readjustment of Vietnam veterans to civilian life. The first surrounds the introduction of the diagnosis, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, into the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. The second concerns the debate over harmful effects on veterans of an herbicide widely used by the U.S. military in Vietnam, Agent Orange. Following a constructivist approach to social problems …

The American Psychiatric Association published the third edition of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-III) in 1980. Unlike DSM-II, it included the listing “post-traumatic stress disorder” (PTSD). The PTSD diagnosis is the product of a concerted effort to reintroduce war neurosis into the official psychiatric nomenclature. This paper tells the sociological story of who put PTSD in DSM-III and how they did it

The controversy revolves around the individuals and interest groups who advance and oppose the claim that exposure to the herbicide has caused high rates of cancer among Vietnam veterans and birth defects in their children. In this paper, I identify the protagonists, explore the claims-making activity, and review the varieties of evidence put forth in the …

  • A Dynamic Analysis of Migration

    Open Access•Gary D Sandefur, Wilbur J Scott•ARTICLE•Demography•1981•Citada por: 38•Referências: 21

This paper examines the utility of viewing migration in the context of work careers and family life cycles. We do this by studying migration as a discrete state, continuous time process. We find that the inverse relationship between age and migration is due almost completely to the effects of family life cycle and work career variables. Further, we find that job- or locationspecific resources, prestige and wage deter migration
