Analysis of Residues in Pottery Vessels Unearthed at the Zhenjiang Tiansheng Daoist Temple and a Discussion on the Daoist Alchemical Vessel ‘Yangcheng Jar’
This study scientifically analyzed nine special‐purpose pottery vessels and their residues from the Tian Sheng Temple Daoist Site in Zhenjiang. Using advanced techniques like SEM‐EDS and micro‐Raman spectroscopy, the research identified that the vessels' structure (shallow body, wide mouth, pointed base) aligns with the prolonged and controlled heating required by external alchemy (waidan). The residues were primarily lead oxide, containing a com…
Health promotion interventions for Asian American dementia caregivers
OBJECTIVE: Many dementia caregivers are older adults who face chronic health challenges driven by both aging and sustained caregiving stress. This vulnerability is compounded for Asian American caregivers by systemic health barriers stemming from linguistic, socioeconomic, and immigration factors. This integrative review aimed to synthesize existing evidence on health promotion interventions targeting Asian American dementia caregivers. DESIGN: A…

Adverse events and contributing factors in Chinese nursing homes
Background: Adverse events in nursing homes, which are unintended incidents causing unnecessary harm to older residents. Previous studies in Chinese populations often focused on adverse events in hospitals, rather than residents in nursing homes. Additionally, they tended to focus on single incident rather than multiple types of adverse events. This study aims to assess the occurrence and contributing factors of multiple adverse events perceived …
Trajectory of Cognitive Decline Across Different Racial/Ethnic Groups
This study examines whether age-related cognitive decline varies by race/ethnicity and how edentulism moderates these effects. Data from the Health and Retirement Study (2006–2020), including 23,669 respondents aged 51 and above across 189,352 person-wave observations were analyzed. Of all respondents, 13.4% were edentulous at baseline, with 65.4% identified as non-Hispanic White, 20.5% non-Hispanic Black, and 14.18% Hispanic. Results from linear…
Trends of Oral Health Status of Older Adults by Immigration Status in the United States
While overall oral health improved among older immigrants from 1999 to 2018, oral health disparities persisted, especially between noncitizen residents and US natives. There were significant differences in oral health between Black immigrants and their US-born counterparts. Future research is needed to corroborate these findings and monitor the trend of oral health disparities
Racial/Ethnic Differences in the Joint Effect of Edentulism and Diabetes on All‐Cause Mortality Risks
DM and edentulism pose an additive risk for mortality in Whites, and there are racial/ethnic differences in edentulism-related mortality
Machine learning approaches to racial/ethnic differences in social determinants of mild cognitive impairment and its progression to dementia in the All of Us Research Program
Objective This study examines how social determinants of health (SDOH) influence mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and its progression to dementia across racial/ethnic groups, identifying disparities and key predictors using machine learning approaches. Methods We analyzed data from 83,180 participants aged 50+ in the All of Us Research Program (65,582 White, 6,207 Black, 4,170 Hispanic, 7,221 Other). The sample had mean ages ranging from 62.4 (His…
Kinlessness and end-of-life care quality
Objectives Close family members provide the majority of end-of-life (EoL) caregiving. However, the number of kinless older adults (defined as lacking children and a partner) is increasing. Moreover, non-White older adults are more likely to rely on close families to provide care at the EoL than their White counterparts. Therefore, we examined the association between kinlessness and the quality of EoL care among older adults and the intersectional…
Edentulism, Social Mobility, and Cognitive Aging
Objectives While edentulism and social mobility have each been linked to cognitive decline, few studies have examined their joint effects or how these relationships vary across age groups. This study investigated the independent and joint effects of edentulism and intergenerational social mobility on cognitive function, with a focus on age-specific patterns. Methods We analyzed data from the Health and Retirement Study (2006–2020), including 23,1…
Unequal Effects of the Lockdown on Mental Health in Shanghai
The COVID‐19 pandemic profoundly impacted population mental health worldwide. Few studies examined how the neighborhood environment and online social connections might influence the social gradient in mental health during the pandemic lockdown. We aim to examine the moderating and mediating role of neighborhood environment and online social connections in the association between socioeconomic status (SES) and mental health outcomes. We conducted …
Different Sources of Social Capital and Loneliness Among Adults in Shanghai, China
Loneliness is a global health concern that negatively impacts physical/mental health. Social capital, encompassing resources from social networks, may protect against loneliness. We investigated the association between different sources of social capital and feelings of loneliness and examined whether these associations differ by sex. An online survey of 3220 Shanghai residents (mean age 34.5 years, 48.5% females) was conducted in 2022, Shanghai,…
Efficacy of a culturally tailored intervention on perceived stigma among women living with HIV/Aids in China
Adult day services
Loneliness and social isolation affect more than 1 in 4 community-dwelling older adults in the United States, who may also require long-term care support. Despite being seen as a solution to the long-term care crisis, most older adults prefer to age in place rather than using skilled nursing facilities. However, in-home care is unsustainable due to a shortage of direct care workers and may exacerbate social isolation by confining older adults to …
