Longitudinal patterns and sociodemographic profiles of health-related behaviour clustering among middle-aged and older adults in China and Japan
Given inevitable age-related decreases in physical or mental capacity, studies on health-related behaviour (HRB) clustering in older people provide an opportunity to reduce health-care costs and promote healthy ageing. This study explores the clustering of HRBs and transition probabilities of cluster memberships over time, and compares sociodemographic characteristics of these clusters among Chinese and Japanese middle-aged and older adults. Usin…
Distrust in government and its relationship with mental health after the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident
BACKGROUND: Distrust in authorities has negative effects on mental health. AIMS: In this study, we aimed to explore whether the impact of distrust in government on mental health became stronger in the area heavily affected by the 2011 Fukushima nuclear power plant accident. METHODS: We examined the effects of distrust in the national government on depressive symptoms three years after the accident among community residents in Fukushima prefecture…
Longitudinal associations of radiation risk perceptions and mental health among non-evacuee residents of Fukushima prefecture seven years after the nuclear power plant disaster
We aimed to explore the effects of prolonged radiation risk perceptions on mental health after the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident occurred in 2011. We investigated the longitudinal associations of radiation risk perceptions five years after the accident with psychological distress and posttraumatic stress symptoms two years later among non-evacuee community residents of Fukushima prefecture. A two-wave questionnaire survey was administere…
Onset and remission of common mental disorders among adults living in temporary housing for three years after the triple disaster in Northeast Japan
The onset of common mental disorders increased in the first year, but then levelled off in the following years among residents in temporary housing after the disaster. Remission from incident post-disaster mental disorders was slower in the shelter group than in the general population. Post-disaster mental health service could consider the greater incidence in the first year and prolonged remission of mental disorders among survivors with a long-…
Long-lasting effects of distrust in government and science on mental health eight years after the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster
Effect of socioeconomic conditions on health care utilization in marital violence
This study highlights the increased health care needs of those experiencing marital violence in Japan. The health care needs of the unemployed are potentially unmet in the presence of marital violence. Removing barriers to health care experienced by the unemployed may be an effective strategy for connecting survivors to needed supports and care
Principles of care for women experiencing intimate partner violence
In Japan, interventions for Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) in the health care setting are rare, partly due to Japanese cultural norms that marginalize women's IPV experiences. A thematic analysis of narratives of eight Japanese health professionals who are experts in IPV care identified shared core values and practices that have guided their development of culturally relevant IPV interventions: supporting women's autonomy to define what is at st…
The effect of a behavioral activation program on improving mental and physical health complaints associated with radiation stress among mothers in Fukushima
The UMIN Clinical Trials Registry (UMIN-CTR; ID = UMIN000014081 ). Registered 27 May 2014
Gender-specific linkages of parents’ childhood physical abuse and neglect with children’s problem behaviour
The intergenerational impact of parental childhood abuse on children's problem behaviour is gender specific, i.e. largely characterized by the same gender linkages. Further studies that explore the mechanisms involved in the intergenerational impact of childhood abuse are needed
The impact of the experience of childhood poverty on adult health-risk behaviors in Japan
The results suggest that interventions and policies for supporting children living in poverty should aim to enhance their future SES and provide better social support, as this might improve their overall health
Childhood Adversities and Adult Use of Potentially Injurious Physical Discipline in Japan
Long-lasting effects of distrust in government and science on mental health eight years after the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster
