Characterization of Norwegian women eating wholegrain bread
Objective To investigate dietary and non-dietary characteristics of wholegrain bread eaters in the Norwegian Women and Cancer study. Design Cross-sectional study using an FFQ. Setting Women were divided into two groups according to wholegrain bread consumption. Subjects Adult women ( n 69 471). Results Median daily consumption of standardized slices of wholegrain bread was 2·5 in the low intake group and 4·5 in the high intake group. The OR for h…
Identifying dietary patterns using a normal mixture model
BACKGROUND: Finite mixture models posit the existence of a latent categorical variable and can be used for probabilistic classification. The authors illustrate the use of mixture models for dietary pattern analysis. An advantage of this approach is taking classification uncertainty into account. METHODS: Participants were a random sample of women from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer. Food consumption was measured using dietary …
Iron stores in relation to dietary patterns in a multiethnic population
Objective We evaluated the association between serum ferritin (s-ferritin), transferrin saturation and dietary patterns, in connection with ethnicity, geographical settlement and lifestyle factors. Design In 2003–2004, a cross-sectional study of health and living conditions was carried out in northern Norway. Setting A questionnaire explored, among other factors, ethnicity and food consumption habits. Principal component analysis was used to asse…
Intake of whole grains in Scandinavia is associated with healthy lifestyle, socio-economic and dietary factors
Objective To identify the dietary, lifestyle and socio-economic factors associated with the intake of whole grains (WG) in Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Design A cross-sectional study. Setting Subsample of the Scandinavian cohort ‘HELGA’ consisting of three prospective cohorts: The Norwegian Women and Cancer Study; The Northern Sweden Health and Disease Study; and the Danish Diet, Cancer and Health Study. Subjects A total of 8702 men and women aged…
Feasibility of innovative dietary assessment in epidemiological studies using the approach of combining different assessment instruments
Objective To assess the feasibility of combining short-term and long-term dietary assessment instruments as new concept for improving usual dietary intake assessment on the individual level. Design Feasibility study of completing three 24 h dietary recalls (24-HDR) and a self-administered food propensity questionnaire (FPQ). The 24-HDR was conducted by monthly telephone interviews, using EPIC-SOFT software. The FPQ was completely standardized acr…
The effect of coffee consumption on serum total cholesterol in the Sami and Norwegian populations
Objective To assess coffee consumption in the Sami and Norwegian populations and to investigate the impact of unfiltered boiled coffee consumption on serum cholesterol concentrations. Design A cross-sectional study. Information was collected by self-administrated questionnaires and total serum cholesterol was analysed. Participants were divided into three ethnic groups: Sami I (Sami used as home language in the last three generations), Sami II (a…
Socioeconomic differences in cancer survival
We found an overall negative socioeconomic gradient in cancer survival when SES is measured as years of education or gross household income. Smoking status prior to diagnosis was an important predictive factor for socioeconomic variation in survival
Comparing methods for handling missing values in food-frequency questionnaires and proposing k nearest neighbours imputation
Objective To investigate item non-response in a postal food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ), and to assess the effect of substituting/imputing missing values on dietary intake levels in the Norwegian Women and Cancer study (NOWAC). We have adapted and probably for the first time applied k nearest neighbours (KNN) imputation to FFQ data. Design Data from a recent reproducibility study were used. The FFQ was mailed twice (test–retest) about 3 months …
Ethnic discrimination and bullying in the Sami and non-Sami populations in Norway
To investigate the prevalence of self-reported experiences of ethnic discrimination and bullying among Sami and non-Sami adults.Cross-sectional, questionnaire-based survey.SAMINOR is a population-based study of health and living conditions that was administered in 2003-2004 in 24 different Norwegian and Sami populated municipalities within central and northern Norway. This analysis was based on 12,265 men and women aged 36-79 years. Ethnic distri…
Comparison of diet measures from a food-frequency questionnaire with measures from repeated 24-hour dietary recalls. The Norwegian Women and Cancer Study
Objective To compare diet measures from a food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) with measures from 24-hour dietary recalls (24HDRs). Design The participants answered an FFQ after completing four, repeated 24HDRs during a year. Setting Norway, nationwide. Subjects Of 500 women randomly selected from The Norwegian Women and Cancer Study (the Norwegian arm of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition), 286 agreed to participate a…
