    The completion of the second year of the Colorado Springs Study provided new insights into the location of HIV infection in a large urban social network. About 250 persons were interviewed by the end of the second year and provided information on over 3500 reported social relationships.     To clarify risk factors for infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) we selected at random 785 homosexual men who had participated in studies of hepatitis B in San Francisco in 1978-80 for a follow-up study of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.     Most studies of sexually transmitted diseases in homosexual men have examined prevalence in clinic populations; for comparative purposes, we analyzed data from a survey of 4,329 gay men conducted in 1977.
